The car was out of Madison, IN and was driven several times at L'burg by Jon Peddie. If my memory serves me correctly Peddie raced hydroplanes as well. The car was in Larry Rust's collection (OH) and when that collection was sold I believe it went to Ron ???, at Ron's Machine Shop, in Shandon. OH or at least Ron had something to do with the car. I always liked the car because it was nicely detailed and nicely painted, plus a Studebaker engine??? I don't know where it is today.

BZneil made his midget self starting and posted some info on it, here, within the last year or so. What kind of car do you have?

I used a Tilton starter that was made for usac cars in the 80's. Fits real well, although you do end up with a starter in your crotch. I made a hand clutch lever on the outside to look like a weight jacker and put the master cylinder under the seat.

Thanks for the info guys, have an 86 Challenger, and we are putting an Iron Duke from a midget in it , plan on going to the mile meets in Maine, just for fun. Have it set up now with a Quartermaster flywheel and starter, which I could install in front of the motor plate easy enough, but a clutch would be the nuts.( Thought I had a photo of the back of the motor...also have the 4 spd. but its really big)

I spoke with Ed Mataka of Raceweld in NJ this morning. The Elto outboard powered car (below) was never owned by them. It's is restored & is owned by Chuck Slate. Ed feels that the name of their business on the hood was done as a courtesy. I'll add maybe as a tribute to their superb craftsmanship and contributions to the sport over the years too.

It was REAL GOOOOD talking to Ed. .... A former midget owner & driver, Bob Lombardo, and myself might take a ride to New Jersey to visit with him.

It was interesting to discover that Ed Mataka follows the happenings both on this thread and over on the Cageless Midget Thread here too.

For those looking for pictures of the Mataka Brothers/Raceweld cars .. over on the Cageless Midget Thread here .. Posting #757 there are two pictures of the Mataka Brothers/Raceweld 3n1 Kurtis midget with Bob Courtwight up.

Back in the 70s the supers required a clutch/starter/tranny. We ran a conventional bellhousing/clutch and the standard 3sp. Chevy with a kit that eliminated the tail shaft. You might PM MacMiller as I believe he runs a clutch/tranny/open drive in his Fike replica.

Hearing that the cammer's sounded great makes me envious I never got to hear one. I used to the love the sound of the Offy's so I'm sure I would have enjoyed the cammer's. I guess my only hope is to catch one at a vintage event someday.

Here's some more from Ascot, the first I don't remember who was driving but somebody built a dirt champ car on the west coast and they let them take some hot laps in it at Ascot so they could shake it down before taking it back to the midwest. The second I think is Lealand McSpadden and the last one might be the "California Cowboy" Ron Rea but I'm not sure. Jerracer will know for sure I suspect.

.....'100 inch wheel base championship dirt cars were legal in CRA competition back in the early seventies. Don Hawley used to race Louie Senter's Ansen Automotive dirt car with the DOHC Ford at Ascot Park. I saw it run.

Spoke to noted racing photographer Ace Lane, Jr. today and was both saddened & angered to find out that he was ripped off AGAIN. This time his better cameras & lenses and his main computer were stolen from his New Jersey home.

That may have been the case but in this night in question they were just shaking down this dirt champ car it didn't actually race. At least that's if my synapses are firing correctly today. I'm bummed that I don't recollect being out there when somebody ran a Ford DOHC.

Have you thought about using a Bert? They are fairly cheap and can be found all over.

  24. Hello from Hoosier Land.....just got home from the Crocky Wright Memorial Gathering. WOW, what a great night. The stories and the heart warming tales shared by some of the group were fantasic. For those of you that missed it, YES, you did. Here's some photos from tonight.

  25. Having a bit of an issue getting the photos to load... To tell a little bit more of the events of the evening, Dick jordan start us off with a moving story then Tony Stewart sent a video message to all there, and bought us all a free round of drinks. Then several of the folks who knew Crocky well, told inside stories on him, John Mahoney, Donald Davidson, Dave Argabright had some enlightening tales. To sum it up, it was a dandy of an evening. Even Mel Kenyon told a funny story. For those of you who know Jimmy Dawson, ask him, the next time you see Ole Jimmy about being left holding the bag......

Blacki, is this the car you are referring too. In 72 or 73 it ran a number 69 in USAC for a couple years. I got this pic from www.madisoncamerunning.com/Racing/oval.html

  27. OK, let's try it again...photos from the Crocky Wright Gathering....

PS, if some says they were there, tell them,"that's ridiculus", they'll know what it means...
RIP Crocky, you made some pretty good friends along the way.

I sure accept them. Those two had one of the best rivalries in racing history, wings or not.

William`s Grove 1972,it doesn`t get much better than that.
