OK, OK, I'm cheating!!! I know this is 1970, but they don't have cages, and it's the only time I ever got 2 four time Indy 500 winners in the same picture together on dirt. Not only that, it will never happen again.

As you sit in front of your tv and watch the pretty boys of the IRL/CART or the pompus, holier than thou, Nascar guys piss and moan about their tires or some such shit, do you ever ask yourself (as I do); Why does todays racing suck so bad? Well here's a clue:

    Right on Rootie..

Well, How about a Vogler tribute.
He was one of, if not the best, our generation saw.. If your new to the game.. He was a modern day Vukovich,Foyt,Ward,Herk.. You name it. He was VERY smart too. He invented.. designed.. and built. But most of all.. He could do what very few others could, (None of todays big names can..) Rich Vogler could take a shit box race car, and MAKE IT FAST on raw talent and determination..

It all started with his pops.. Don Vogler.

But it all didn't come from pops.. This is Rich Voglers mom, Eleanor.. Since Rich's death she started the "Rich Vogler Memorial Scholarship" for young racers who attend college. I met Eleanor when I was given the Scholarship. She is a HOOT!! A very nice, and Lively lady. A true race fan.

    Then came the boy..

    Rich was NOT into loosing..

Here is Don, Rich, Cindy Vogler and OUR VERY OWN Racer5c!!

Sadly, Don lost his life in a midget.. But he was doing what he loved..
This picture was taken moments before the accedent, Rich is running right behind him

    Rich kept winning..

    Vogler Understood going sideways!

Here vogler takes flight off of Steve Kinsers right rear..

In an age of "Money gets you a ride" Vogler overcame all obstacles and made it to INDY!!

The last few years of his life he was SO FAST!! He was in the Hoffman Sprint car.

Vogler, always the inovator, Figured they could make a Buick V6 outrun everyones V8's.. The key was, with a V6 they got a heafty weight break.. And Voglers ability to make cars fast!

They won the USAC sprint car championship in this V6 powered car. The Hoffmans have this car restored, Check it out a few pages back.

The next year they ran the Coveted #1 USAC assigned number when you win the championship. This is the car Vogler lost his life in while leading on live television.. (Note the offset!! Better not get too sideways and try to recover by turning right very far!!)
    ...Only Vogler!

    He was the real deal..

If you never saw Rich Vogler race, then you will never know what you missed, it can't be put into words how good he was. I was lucky enough to be around him, he drove for my dad and won the USAC Midget Championship in our car, The first time he ran for us was a two day show at Winchester, Ron Shuman (who is no slouch) ran our car thefirst day, started on the pole and was running WAY in the back at the end of the first lap. My dad put Rich in for the second day, EVERYONE thought he was crazy to hire Rich, he had a bad reputation for crashing a lot, but my dad saw something in him that not many others did at that time. he went out that day and set a new 1 lap worlds record for a half mile paved track, he won the Hut Hundred in our car when my dad was to sick to come to the race track and I was taking care of the car, same thing in the picture that was posted with me in it. I was lucky enough to TRY to fill in for him at IRP the night before Indy when he couldn't race Jonathan Byrd's midget so I got to drive it. I was lucky to have him drive my step Dad's Indy car and I truly believe he would have won Indy if he hadn't had a tire fall off (his best friend and midget Mech put the tire on) his on track time for the distance covered up until the time the tire fell off and he hit the wall was the fastest of anyone in the race. He was running the second car, Rutherford was the primary driver, when Rich blew Rutherford off going down the front straightaway J.R. wasn't happy, I will just leave it at that. If you didn't see him run second at Terre Haute in a Sprint Car with the belly Pan torn off holding his feet up as he drove you will never know what you missed, if you never saw him kick rear engined super modifieds ass's in an ancient #45 upright sprint car with a bolt on roll cage at Winchester you don't get it, there is no way you can because you would have to see the incredible things he did to even come close to understanding what he was all about. I am lucky to have been his friend.

Very cool Summary about Rich, Roy. I was not fortunate enough to see him race in person.

Josh, I had no Idea you were a recipient of the Vogler scholarship. That is a very cool thing to have earned. Not many have done it and the fact that you have such a huge appreciation for him and the history makes it even better.

Thats pretty cool on the scholarship Josh.. Ill be at Winchester the 20th for the vogler memorial if the weather looks good.. Last year was a wild one but the weather was great.. A lot of people ask why we would want to drive 4 hours for that race then drive 4 hours home to get in around 9 pm on a sunday.. :) because its gotta be done..

    As always!.. Well said Roy.

I put my midget up this past weekend.. I wanted it on the roof but Zoning has been on the rampage around or shop.. All roof mounted signs must be removed.. The top of all signs must only be 15'. Anyways.. here it is..

A lot of the parts are wrong.. but its just a wall hanger.. at 55MPH it looks fine!

Yep.. I put a 1/4 inch stainless steel cable through every part on it today, and we got a 6' barbed wire fence around the place they lock every night.. so, bring some wire cutters and some big bolt cutters..

...and we have a guard cat. Don't laugh.. We have a wild cat that lives in our shop during the winter.. HE"S MEAN AS HELL!! We feed him when he wants, but he EATS EVERYTHING!! He kills squirrels, and has tried to kill a ground hog twice. Wade HATES him! He attacks Wade everytime he see's him, he draws blood!

I am one of the few that can walk up and pet him, probably cause I let him sleep on my truck hood everyday without freaking out, and I bring him treats.. (but don't tell Wade)

  28. I can't seem to fathom how to post a photo of my '32 "Big Car"; but, if you go to YouTube and search Miller-Ford, go to the image that shows two Stromberg 97's, or go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=T-Rs8T2kZHQ, you see and hear my car. It's also at http://jalopyjournal/forum/showtread.php?1=.
It's last outing was at the AAA Speedway (formerly California Speedway). The event was the exhibition of the Historic Indy/Champ Car Association. Mine was the oldest car running. The others ranged from upright Sprint Cars to rear engined 60's and 70's cars. On Friday and Saturday, we were averaging a calclulated 120 m.ph. around the two mile tri-oval. I thought I could go faster, but I was relegated to the low lane, because of the age of my car. I found that, at times, I had to take a higher lane to pass some of newer cars, including the Indy Roadsters and ealier rear engine types. On Sunday, there were only three of us left. I thought I could up my lap times, using the whole width of the track; but, I developed some carburation problems, and couldn't take advantage of the moment.
We'll be running at Buttonwillow Raceways' (west of Bakersfield, CA)road course, te first weekend of May.
