That's the way I see it also. In the 50s-early60s Indy was populated with, and supported by, owners who were essentially sportsman indulging in their chosen passion/hobby/past-time or whatever you choose to call it. Guys like Pete Schmidt, Jim Robbins, Anstead and many others. While there was sponsorships involved, much of their racing was funded out of their own wallets. By the mid 60s corperate America found racing to be a viable marketing tool and racing became less a sport and more a business. Any time 'big money' is infused into something, things are bound to change and whether that's a good thing or not is debateable.

[The story begins shortly after the 1962 Indianapolis 500 race. The intent was made by the Ford Motor Company to launch a multi-million dollar Ford Indianapolis racing project to enhance their image in the mushrooming youth / performance market. Bill Gay, Executive Engineer of the Advanced Engine Department of Ford Engine and Foundry Division, assembled a team of engineers including Joe Macura and Richard Chen. Their objective was to build a racing engine of 255 CID, producing at least 325 hp, and weighing no more that 350 lbs.]

[Clark’s good showing in the 1963 500 race fired up the enthusiasm of the Ford company officials to develop an even better engine with the potential to dominate the Indy scene for several years to come. The new design objectives were to increase output by 50 HP over the 63 push rod engine, with a weight gain not to exceed 50 lbs.]

.....'Praise will go on and on for these last few posts w/ pictures from Rich and Tony. 'Simply...Wow!

But Tony's B&W shot of Roy in the #23 car is definitely one of my favorites ever in these 777 pages!

What never gets' mentioned is congrats' to Josh and Roy for knowing what really looks good and that is their Parnelli Jones/Bill Engelhart inspired open-face helmets. 'That's the way it's done!

And seeing Van May there and in the car------too good to be true!

Meting Van May was worth the trip! When we asked him if he wanted to drive one of the cars I didn't think he wanted to at first, but I'm sure glad he ended up driving, there is no doubt he won hot laps, was so fun meeting someone that I grew up reading aboutand admiring, and meeting him and seeing he is an even more cool than you thought

    Roy,
    Give Jodie my best regards!

I have photos from Lincoln, but had to work Friday nite. I REALLY wish I could have been there!

Check my smug mug for a few nite shots from Lincoln.

I didn`t catch any sideways action at lincoln though, Too many cars out there at Once,I thought. Should run the wingless cars separate from the winged cars,in my opinion.

    Roy,

Here you are at nite-Lincoln. I was up on the T-3 flagstand for these.

Thanks to my buddy T-3 flagman Mike Yeaple for asking me if I wanted to use his flag stand to get these shots!

WOW! What can say.. Unreal weekend. So many good stories.

Buildy, Rabs, Marsicano, and the others from the HAMB I met.. GREAT MEETING YA'LL! Fun to put a face with the name!

Roy, what a blast! TOO many things to mention, ...and some things we JUST CAN'T! :p

FINALLY got to throw these cars around the way THEY WERE MEANT TO BE!

I'll post more stories and pics as I get time.. But for now I'll leave you with a Picture that describes the whole weekend (Sceenery, people, cars, layout, events.. hell just the "Feel" of it) ...along with the quote of the weekend that was spoken by none other than the LEGEND, Van May as he was getting tips and instructions from a few people about running the car at Latimore:

"Fella's, I'm jus gonna go out there, and WHAT HAPPENS, HAPPENS" -Van May.

  23. Roy Caruthers sideways , in a real sprint car! I have no idea as to how it could get any closer to THE REAL DEAL than that.

  24. And Van May too! I love the story about his 'driving instructions'. I understand the implications all too well.

    That is classic Van May!

Roy,Josh and Ken and all,I sure hope you will come back next time for more!!!

Best part was when Van tried to grab the cage to pull himself out of the car, guess that goes to show ya it didn't bother him that there was no cage, he ran as hard as if HAd one

Van May is a funny son-of-a-gun! I saw him last year at Grandview speedway in Bechtelsville, PA at a USAC/ARDC sprint/midget double header. I remember when he used to wear a pancho to the races. We had neat times and good racing back in the day. Hey Josh- your sprint cars are really neat looking! It brings me back to when I was a lot younger, and my family would watch the USAC sprint cars at Reading, PA. Fond memories!
