Spike Ruth called the simply nerf bars, but I always thought that referred to all small diameter tube bumpers. 'Kickouts' makes sense for the side nerfs.

Do rules specify the diameter of Nerf Bars, tube or solid? I'm interested in rules from the 1950s (if any). Maybe you can tell me what was the typical bar diameter?

Mike Nazaruk, the pride of North Bellmore Long Island, in the McNamara sprint car. This was Mike's favorite Lee Elkins car because his lucky number number was 11 (8+3 =)

In the John Hanscom photo is his left hand pulling the outside brake lever?

    Yes. He's still "saving it"...

Ask any good Sprint Car driver about what happened after a good crash, and he'll usually state:

"It got outta shape, I tried to save it, thought I had it but after the third flip I figured I might not be able to save it" :D

That might be the ejection seat lever.

  9. Great video! Except for the palm trees being much taller and the now paved infield, old San Berdoo has not changed a bit.

If I could be so bold, I'd like to answer on behalf of everyone else on this thread and say: "HELL YES!" These are great. Ol' Ziggy wasn't scared.

A couple years later - without the cage. Man, he was proud of that Bardahl decal. He must have been doing OK, he has a new truck in this shot. And, he has fuel injection instead of the three deuces. That's Rip Bates towards the back left. The guy in the white shirt may be Doris Wisegarver. Doris drove stock cars and made the Daytona 500 in the mid 60's.
