O/T (AGAIN I KNOW!) Sorry, I'm heading to Florida Destin/Blue Mountain Beach area, are there any good dirt track's in that area? I've hit a few of the central and eastern Fla. tracks about 15 years ago for Speed Week's. So now I'm hoping to catch a show or 2 while I'm in the Destin area.. P.M. with details if anybody knows of any...Ryan

met a guy locally on line while talking about the old hatfield speedway, his name is jay sowers he and his brother jim used to restore vintage race cars up until his brother died in the early '90's ( sowers racing & restoration). he emailed me some pics of the stuff he had, not sure if he still has it or if it was sold?
kinda not good shots cause there all bunched up in his gargae but enjoy them anyway.

  4. That little blue and white Kurtis Offy is gorgeous. You don't often see a Kurtis in un molested original form today. All set up for pavement too. That thing makes my shorts wet!

That SESCO powered midget with the cage would be good enough for me.

It's cool to see a garage full of cars taken right out of their era, rail frame offys next to an early 70's 4 bar sesco ???? This turns me on a whole lot more than the new resto cars, at least the over done versions. Hard to tell what the sesco 4 bar is, Has that edmunds look with an add on cage....anyone recognize it ? I still miss the sound of the offy, it sounded better than that noisy front drive on the sespool, and both were better than the v-dubs with stubs....insert fart noise here.

  8. I found these in some of my Mom's stuff. She and Dad knew most of the drivers personally when dad was running in 46-48. The guys that followed the weekly circut on the west coast were a pretty tight group. They ran damn hard in equipment that would scare the shit out of today's drivers. The #20 Ed Haddad is in belonged to John Balch. It is Kurtis Kraft midget #2.

You really, really want one of those ?

  10. Some more. Notice the 1/4 eliptic springs on the rear of Gib Lilly's Donald O'connor Ford. That would make this an early car also. Frank expirimented with 1/4 eliptics on all 4 corners, then parallel bars on all 4 corners. The 1/4 eliptics wern't liked very well by the drivers. The 4 bar cars worked good on paved tracks, but the choice for dirt was cross spring front, and bars on the rear.

What impresses me about a lot of these old cars is how sanitary they were. Many of them look show ready. Keeping a dirt track midget that clean had to be a job when they were running 7 days a week!

  12. I was in Don Garlits Musem last week. It seems like Big Daddy has an eye for all sorts of race cars and hot-rod memorabilia. This beauty was on display in the classic car and hot-rod musem>>>>.

ok here's the skinny on the car collection I posted. Jay sowers emailed me and said that his nephew scott sowers still has all the cars pictured + more except for the hilligiss hemi sprinter. that was sold to a mid west collector a few years ago. FYI that hemi powered hilligis was the last chassis to come out of the hilligiss shop before mr hilligiss died! after he died a mr drumheller
bought the shop and moved it to 4th st in allentown pa , "drummy" finished the car then sold it.
info on the kurtis kraft: that is the "Caccia" offy KK #0-85-47 driven by george fonder's they restored that + all of these cars back in the 1980"s!

Some time back, I came across this price list, posted on the net, originally from Johnny Pawl racing, who was a dealer for Kurtis cars. There was another page, which I can't find now, which listed car kits at well over $2000 as I recall. This was some serious money in 1950 dollars. Speed costs money................

Sure miss those prices...I got to visit Johnny Pawl's place often when I was a kid in the late 60's. I sorta remember a couple cars hanging from the rafters that I couldnt keep my eyes off of. Cream colored with red lettering....one was number 17 ? seems like he mentioned it being in a movie. Offy parts and kurtis pieces in good supply. And he always gave the kids...(me) something to drink.

If you look real close at the second picture it looks like it may have an Edmunds tag in the middle of the dash

Here's a scan of the AAA registration plate from the midget my father and his partner and friend Will Youakim ran at Nutley Velodrome in 1938. This was either on the dash or the firewall, not sure which.

  22. Here's a couple of my Dad's URA dash tags. The Offys ran the "Blue Circut", and the Fords, or any other power ran the "Red Circut". The tags were colored accordingly.
