al -great picture, in your post, of one of the Brenn cars, always thought Mr. Brenn fielded some of the best looking open wheel cars, midgets, sprints, and champ cars ever, whether they were all white, robins egg blue, red, or white with red scallops as pictured,or his later yellow modifieds they were all ultra clean, and very "racy" looking even standing still - got to enjoy all of them while my uncle "jiggs" drove for him -

BZ, Their are three popular vintage tail shapes for building vintage 50s/60s sprint cars. The one you have is the Watson style, but was originally the Kurtis design.
I have molds that I made for my projects for the Kuzma/Meskowski/Leffler tail shape. I built this mold to make a new tail for the Greg Weld/Dunseth car in your previous pix
The other popular sprint tail shape is the Edmonds design. I made that mold for my new Fike Plumbing replica.

My car is going to be a 4 bar cageless Edmunds style Midget with a Chevy II. Not totally historically accurate, but hopefully cool to look at. My chassis is coming along, I will post some pics on Sat.

Mac, your stuff is so cool looking. I am going to make molds for the nose and hood on my midget, and might pull a mold off the tail because it took me along time to find this one, and I know a few other people are looking for these things.

Here is my frame so far. The front axle is just tacked together, but I have mounted the whole front end, radius rods, torsion bars and arms, pan hard, hubs, brakes, spindles, ect. The front shock mounts are to high, I am going to lower them about 2"-3".

I just got the rear section of the frame done and realized I have to make a piece of the bottom frame rail removable to get the rear end in it. I mounted hairpins for the back, but they are causing all kinds of clearance problems for the pitman arm. I also like the simplistic look of the old sprint and champ cars from the day with just the upper radius rod and torsion arm rear suspension. I have pictures of a few midgets with this setup in 1967-1969 so it was being used during the time period I am going for. I have vintage steel torsion bar arms that I can use for this setup and mounting new radius rods is not a big deal.

The next projects on the list will be the steering mount hoop, fab up some bird cage plates, get the rear in it and mount the seat. That should pretty much give me a roller.

Looks great...was that a bent edmunds that you replaced tubes on ? It's been quite awhile since I've seen one much less worked on one. We had some of the late 60's early 70's that had radius rods all the way around. Rear torsion arms were set up with a link from the bottom of the bird cage to one of several holes for adjusting rate. Front bars were on rollers, but we ran coilover konis on the front (with longer mounts) since they had adjustable compression and rebound. Roy may even have some pics of Doug's stuff if you ask nice. I'm not sue if ours was the norm....I sure fixed alot of those damn glass tails though, I was pretty happy when FBI made the poly tank.

Neil, The midget is looking good. Coming along nicely. The reworked rear frame looks great.

  21. I was only 6, so I don't remember who won this 50 lapper at Pomona in February 1951, but there were some pretty big names entered.

  22. Wonder if Roy remembers this one. I found this ad on the classified ads page in the April 57 Hot Rod magazine. It was listed for $2500 by Doug Caruthers of Anaheim. I rember this car from the cover of Hot Rod in 54. Tube frame, aluminum skin, full house V8-60, and gorgeous maroon and gold paint by Barris. I think it was originally built by Dick Kraft. I would happily give $2500 for it today!! :D

I saw the Dick Kraft car a few pages back. Attached are some images of a similar hot rod my son (BZNEIL) and I built a few years back, we called it the "Racester". Not vintage, or pre 60's, but I believe it has the look. Cross torsion, wide fives, Frankland 3/4 ton QC, 5 speed, two fours on a "Nailhead". Shaw layed down the vintage lettering.

I have a very faded copy of Dick Kraft in his roadster. Someone gave it to me when they saw the "Racester".

I think the Rebel Run deal is well worth the drive. Not only midgets, but old big cars (sprint cars) too. Check out the Antique Auto Racing Assc. website. Neat cars plus lots of old timers with stories to tell.
