    Roy,

I'll keep it to a ten year span:

1955-1965 USAC Champ cars. That way I'd get to run both offy and injected small block, non-cage Big Car on the MILES.

A tie for second would be 25'-35' big cars..

or The Southern California Midget scene just after WWII. Vuky and the boys racing EVERY night of the week at places like Gilmore stadium, in front of HUGE crowds and a few Movie stars of the day..

Which one of you , today, would have the balls to get into a miller on a mile dirt track without a roll cage, or safety belt, or even a roadster with no safety equipment.

I don't think I could do it, today!

  4. Ummm, they do it every year:D!!!

Now, NOT at the speeds they were going, but I'd squeeze into a Miller 91 in a HEARTBEAT!

I would. I have known Charlie Masteres for 50 years and know he would, he was always crazy anyway[ask somebody who saw him drive on the banks].

Hey, folks , we were all crazy younger days, but notice the guys in the cars today with their fire suits, helmets , and seat belts.
Only time I ever drove a mile track was in 1947 at Kelly Petillos mile bank track in San Diego, one and only race on the track!
street roadster, no belts, and in sport coat , slacks and dress shoes! Did the mile in 46 seconds. LOL, and Rajo Jack did it is 39 with a Miller, next weekend.
Came back from Tiajuana one day , dressed the same way, and rode 3 motorcycles on the track and blew up two of them.
No personal protection at all. sport coat waving in the breeze.

Bill Engelhart, Evansville, Wisconsin has the # 18 Kershner Sprinter,
beautifully restored. He also raced the car for Kershner, as did Larry Rice,
    Johnny Parsons Jnr, plus others.

I found it on Getty or Corbis a couple years ago, but there was no info on it. Appears to have been a race through a residential area???

Also just came across this site detailing the history of the San Diego Steel roadster, lots of good pics and history.

    It's a small world...

That car is owned by Dave Schleppi. Dave runs the "research Department" at ZAKIRA'S here in Cincinnati. When they need a part, Dave gets on the phone and burns up the hours tracking down "what went where".. It's a full time job. Dave also did a LOT towards the convincing of Coker tire to repo the Speedway tires that are due out very soon! Dave has a the "Gift of gab" He drives the roadster in many Vintage events, and keeps it in top notch shape!

[IMG][IMG]These are taken at Boise Idaho "Super Oval" in 1975 or1976. Malloy "uprights" The white #14 driven by Bob Naylor. The Maroon # 15 driven by his brother Tom. The #15 was renumbered as #00 in 1979 and driven by heir dad Glen "pappy" Naylor who had come out of retirement. My car #00 posted last week is the 1979 version of the 15 car. The red #00 on the trailer is in 1980 . Sadley both boys lost their lives racing. Bob in the #14 car in 1980 at Las Vegas. Tom in a Hyder Hawk super at Bakersfield in the early 90's. The pit pictures show a different era of racing. Not big time certainly but a time in the Boise area when almost every service station or garage had a race car setting around and many of them were open wheelers. Coors was the Naylors sponsor for years and their product is faithfully displayed in the pics. OB ...Having trouble getting pics to post If not I'll send them separately. Guess I need a tutor on this.

I have always thought that was one of the most beautiful roadsters ever built, if you look at the roadster sprint cars Don Brown built, most notably Greg Welds they look a lot like that car

I remember the car but do not remember who owned it. Called Charlie Masters and he did not remember who owned it but thought they were from Ohio or Michigan. If that is right I do not know how they got hooked up with a steel company in southern In. Maybe someone else has more info.

The Kershner #18 ran in USAC from 1975 through 1978. It was a Grant King chassis and Kershner Inc. was the owner.

I didn't realize the San Diego steel car and Lyle Roberts' roadster were one in the same. I had always assumed Lyle's car was a Dowker roadster, like the Jet Rod cars.

    Interesting.
