Thanx Rootie, I also viewed Roger Williamsons fatal in Holland in 73, Took me back a bit. I first viewed it in the movie quick and the dead several years ago and it hung with me for a long time. Thank god we have come far past that with capable safety crews.

March in Ohio, and judging by the other pics in the article, I'm thinking it may have been a tad "nippy" that day. :)

If that was your first trip in a sprinter, Roy, you sure didn't show it.

Here's one I found in a drawer. Don't think I've posted it before. Think it's Terre Haute, and the back of the photo says it was taken by Harry Goode of Greenwood, Ind. Probably found it at a flea market. Interesting that there's no "Sterling Plumbing Spl." on the hood.

Roy, I'm sure you're aware, but for others, there was a 2 page spread on the Golden Greek in Circle Track Aug. 1985 issue. Here's a couple more pics.

Thanks Rootie for posting the pic of Jerry Richert running at Tampa... I remember Richert always had quality equipment and knew how to use it. He wasn't afraid to stick the nose of the car into a space if he thought he could make it work, and more times than not he made the pass.

A few more from Tampa 63, looks like they liked a heavy/wet track back then!

Thanks, racinfool. I've got that one on my computer. It was on a disk that Dennis Unger sent me. I'm still going through those disks and finding photos I haven't seen. I thought I had posted that one, but apparently not.

    Thanks again...

Nice photo of Johnny White, Rootie. I recall seeing him drive that car in an IMCA race at Salem, and I was told it was a 312 Offy at the time.

    indybigjohn,
I never heard of a 312 Offy. As you know Dizz always bought all the junk motor stuff he could at Indy, take it home and fix it. Inclulding welding up cranks, blocks, cases and whatever he could to save a dime. I sure all his Offys were 270's or smaller. As far as I know there were five 318 Offys built period. Maybe Dizz stroked a 270. Do not know what that would come out to, but I do not think Dizz would spend the money for a stroked[new] crank. Do not think you could bore a 270 out to 312.

There has always been interesting talk of the IMCA/CSRA 318 OFFYS used by Shrader, Collins and Wilburn. What "thumpers" those things must have been, but I was having a chat with Jimmy Wilburn's mechanic, Barney Wimmer, some years ago, and asked him about the 318 OFFYS and he claimed that the biggest OFFY that he and Wilburn ever had was a 292..... kind of an interesting little twist to the 318 story......??????

I think the track crew at Tampa was one of the best. After hot laps and qualifying they'd bring the grader out to work the track; then after the heat races, the dash, and the conci they'd water the track down and grade it again. Al Sweeny made sure the guys got some bite and as a result when the car went out of bounds it wasn't coming back. Those nobbies would throw a clod as big as two fists doubled up together half way up into the grandstands at the end of turn four. Now that was racin!
