    I'd say mid to late 70's .

has the magnetic timer thing, cool, but not too useful.

the rest of it will be useful to you for cars up to electronic ignition, give or take.

Value? prolly low hundreds, more to you if it is from your Dad.

My dad had several pieces of vintage Sun testing equipment in his old shop...couple scopes, tach/dwell meters, leakdown tester and a Sun 504 Distributor machine.

I don't remember using this or seeing it used...it's about 4" in diameter

    Any ideas?

My brother used to work for Sun Electric in Crystal Lake Ill. I have used Sun equip all my life. I still use the leak down tester on my race cars to check cylinder leakage and set the barrel valve on the fuel injection. I still have a Snap -On Analascope in great condition with instructions etc. anyone interested??
The Sun Vat 40 is the best charging system and battery tester compared to anything I have used in the modern day, Bar None!!!

Not a Sun, but our 1935 "Coilster" test stand. Yes, it's in our living room…

    Whoops, spelled wrong, it's "Koil-ster".

Came with the leather bound tune-up spec book, so if you need the dwell and timing specs for a 1935 Dusenberg SJ, or a 1922 Whippet, I got 'em...

Brian, that is sweet! it belongs in the house...hahaha

heres one I picked up a few years back, it was in Pioneer high school in warren MI. a guy that went there in the 1960s, rescued it from the bulldozer, it still works, has all the attachments, timing lights and instruction manuals.
The dist machine is from another high school class room.

Hello, My first post here! Thankfull to find this page and people with same intrests. I'm into restoring antique/vintage items. About anything old with rust lol. I've collected several 1902-1930 Brass Cage/Blade desk fans and brought them back to life. Also restore 60's Mustangs and other cars as well. Restoring a 65 coupe for a friend now.
Last week I found a 60's Sun 820 Engine Tester I want to use in the shop. It's all there but the Sun 820 Tester sign that attaches to the top of the gauge/meter head. This machine has been in dry storage since 1970 so the lettered top is long gone.
I'm hoping someone here may help me locate a 820 lettered top I can install on my new find to make things whole again. I'm thinking of off another 820 that has been used for parts and still has the nameplate on it someone may want to sell. Thanks for any help or suggestions on this and I hope to post more here in the future. gary

I have a Sun Tune up kit in the red clam-shell case which is as close to new as possible, no stains, scuffs, etc. I would like to put the piece on display (and occasional use) in my garage. While this might sound strange I'm looking for the factory shipping box these kits came in. This is the kit that contained the dwell tachometer P/N 7601 which had the two knobs same size. All other components; Sun Gun, remote starter, compression, vacuum gauge were common to this and the later kit which had the different dwell/tach. At this point the box need not be great but one that is not grease saturated would be a plus. Putting this back to "factory-new" is kind of important as this is a tribute to my Dad (long passed) who purchased this kit and my first real set of Craftsman tools for me when I was a kid. I am willing to pay well for something decent. Thanks. Mike mkolesar@patton.com

    Hi John,

    many thanks for your attention:)
I have seen this timing light, but to me the risk was too big, in addition, I would have had to alter it, plug? Meter-instrument. I do not know whether electrically in my module would have fitted, you have seen my wiring diagram in my previous post.
    I have a lot of time, I must continue to search....I am a pensioner:D

look for a number on the connector, Amphenol -USA or Cannon-Australia probably made it. Prices vary greatly, I bought one for a 1970's carbide depositor from 20$ with postage, they list in some catalogs for 40-60$ plus postage!

Your going to have to check each situation, the connectors are a fairly common commercial type, they come in various number of pins. Sun like many other manufacturers don't want you to know too much! they want to keep their in house service people employed! Would be nice to have the wiring diagrams! I don't have a 900 or I would give him the color code and where they go. But with a little help from another Hamber we will get him going! It isn't rocket science but damn close!
I went from a newer style plug to a older style plug a pic of what it looked like inside the plug. different but, made into the same.

    Hi John,
    Hi oldgoaly,

the problem is, the original timing light has no meter and none variable resistor...and I would have to change the whole circuit of timing light ( see above in mine post appendix wiring-circuit)
Here have I a still picture of my manual, so does the timing light from.

    Greeting from Germany
    Michel/Mike

PS.: @ olgoaly, you still remember? my instruments/meter problem is solved, I the other day with Ebay/usa of 3 Meter/instruments (with the correct number) bought, I hopes, her to function:rolleyes:.
