What is a decent oscilloscope to own - Allen, Sun, Heyer, or ??

 

I think the best answer is that IF you know how to read the patterns either of the mentioned units are sufficient.

My experience is with Sun and Allen machines.

The Allens run thru a diagnostic procedure and will actually read out on the scope the vehicles problems (along with the good stuff).

That's a nice feature BUT the Allen scopes are small in size.

I prefer the big assed Sun scope. They will give you a suntan!

Which make of oscilloscope has the best chance of repairs using common off the shelf parts available in this day and age? I agree that CRTs might be a problem.

Man that sure does bring back memories. That is the exact model the dealership I worked at many moons ago had and I spent many hours using it to "speed tune" my buddies cars after hours.

 

Anyone have schematics for these? I've got a 620 that needs a little love...

 

I've made a few changes to mine, a small SunPro scope and printer, the HEI module, a sparkplug rack and coils. I can run a distributor up and fire the plugs as if it is on the car, you can follow it on the scope.
I haven't dared to stick a magneto on it, I worried the internal drive 'cone' will shred trying to turn the magneto. It takes a lot of oomph to drive one, I need to find somebody that has done it and ask them.
The clutter isn't normal, I am adding a cabinet underneath so all the junk from downthere is on top for the moment.

Hello Sun machines Friends,
after two and a half years, I have finally found the right timing light here in Germany and bought. The seller has offered me 2 timing light (same type), I bought both. Unfortunately, with one of two timing Lights the Flash-Bulb is broken :-(....
Until now, I the timing light to my SUN 900 - Engine Tester not yet testing, I am a pensioner and never have time ;-)

I believe this Herbrand HT-660 Coil Tester is Similar

 

I have a Sun 140 distributor tester, serial 5414. I'm about to clean it up and restore it and am looking for anyone who might have an operating manual and parts manual for this model. I found a manual for the 400-500 series testers but would like to find one for a 140. Also, does anyone know how to tell the age? The rolladex spec thingy on the back goes from 1949 up to 1957. I assume it must be a 57 correct? Appreciate any help. Cheers, Bill

 

It's no earlier than that obviously. Can often date electronics/electrical by date codes on pots (potentiometers)

I've had my eye out for the distributor testers and Sun Machines, they would be a nice addition to the garage. They couldn't be given away for a while probably.

Anyone have electronics chops? Old school electronic chops. I'm diving into my master motor tester to get my feet wet before I attempt any of my other stuff.

 

Those brown and orange critters are capacitors, never power up older electronics unless those have been replaced and the item checked out. The electrolytic type have a paste inside that dries out, the waxed paper/foil deteriorate and they short out. The good news is they are relatively easy and inexpensive to replace. It's real satisfying to see old gear run reliably without losing all the magic smoke.

No problem, it's antique radio website but all the same rules apply basically. Vintage electronic repair goes right along with hot-rodding and good skills to have. The power supply is key to anything electrical new or old, clean filtered DC and it will usually give many years good service. If not, not.

 

Does anyone have a source or alternative for the threaded lead terminals? Im talking about the two threaded nubs in the lower right of the pic.
