Does anyone on here know where to go to get a vintage 1950 merc overdrive trans. rebuilt? A good transmission shop in colorado would be great to find!
I've done a few '58-'62 chevy od's for my truck and then a '69 3sp+od. You can do it with just a top shelf snap ring plier and your good common sense and some time. You get stuck come back here with pictures, plenty here will guide you through. You get to say,"Yes, I re-built that overdrive myself on my work bench this fall." Regards, Cosmo with the '49 dd only vehicle........
What's wrong with it? Do you have decent mechanical abilities? These transmissions are not very complicated and parts are easy to come by. Get a good manual and do it yourself. Then you'll know exactly how it was done and have the confidence to repair it (or others) again if needed. It's not just about saving money, although you will, it's about building experience and know-how.
x3 on the do-it-yourself approach, you might even learn something along the way. These are simple transmissions, a good set of feeler gage's and a caliper will also help. Make sure everything goes back on the shafts in the same order it came off. Good Luck
