I'm headed for Virginia and West Virginia in a couple weeks just to get out of Maine before winter sets in. I have no plan other than to do some back road cruising. Does anyone know of any cool car related places I should visit. Thanks, John
Hello, I don't know of any cool things to do there , but rt33 from WVA to Va over the mountains is the most senic & coolest roads i have ever been on . It is worth the trip
John, Here are a few suggestions for you to ponder. * Skeeter Pletcher's junkyard in Gassaway, WV (Gassaway Exit off I-79). Former Pontiac dealer's private stash of cars from 1930's to 1980's. Plenty of early iron still there! * Cliff's Museum of Auto Memorbilia in Harrisville, WV. Old dealership restored to the way it was in the 1940's. The building houses a cool collection of cars, tools, license plates, etc. Check it out at: cliffwvathebuilding.com * J. Taylor Auto Collection in Huntington, WV. Nice museum with an good variety of cars. Free admission. Check it out at: jtaylorautocollection.com * PM me if your travels will take you near Charleston, WV. You are welcome to stop by my garage, The Hot Rod Grille, for a visit. I'll try to get some other "locals" to open their garages for you to check out if there is tiime in your schedule. Jim
Its actually Skeeter Pletcher, and good luck getting in,, i grew up with his nephew and am a family friend and you can count on one hand the times ive been in the junkyard. I grew up in Gassaway, last time i was there most of the stuff was pretty well rusted
Thanks Jim and 31ster...great information . Jim , if I make it over your way, I'll check in with you. Thanks for the invitation. John
You might be a few weeks late for some beautiful fall leaves in the scenery, but Skyline Drive/The Blue Ridge Parkway is a fantastic drive this time of year. By the time that you get down there, the leaves will be down along that route. If you're going to be in the Williamsburg / Yorktown area you really ought to take a drive on the Colonial Parkway. A lot of locals don't even use it! It's a 23 mile long drive along the York River and the James River. It is a non-stop, no businesses, no commercial vehicles allowed, no traffic lights or stop signs NICE drive through some nice scenery. Again, by the time that you'll be here most, if not all, of the leaves will be down, but it should still be a nice drive. Go to www.vpccc.org and see if there are any events / cruise nights / swap meets happening in your time frame too.
