Hot Rods Visit to Virginia from Uk in Septrmber -Possible car hunt.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Wayne the Limey, Aug 1, 2017.

  1. Hi, I am visiting Virginia (Virginia Beach) from 1st to 16th September & I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction. I am looking to possibly buy a car while I'm there to export back to the UK. & was wondering if anybody had something or know someone with something I can look at. I'm looking for a solid, running, tidy honest car from say 1948 up to 1956. The interior needs to useable but does not need to be perfect. I look forward to pointers or suggestion you may have.

    Regards,

    Wayne

Have you checked the Craigslist ads there? These were in the Richmond, VA version. What's the most you want to spend? Here's three decent ones to start for $12k or less-a Caddy, Buick and Ford. You're a lot better off doing it this way instead of dealing with CCC in Illinois in my opinion. Feel free to PM me if I can help you out. Sorry I'm not in Virginia....

@porkn****** The picture kind of twists the color, makes it look more pink, but it is a factory 57 color called "Dusty Rose" buried in God knows how many coats of clear. This thing shines like a diamond...

  7. Thanks man. I got a thing for mid '50s colors and that one just makes me smile.

  9. I must say that I do like the Cadillac. Would not quite have enough money for that by the time I get to Virginia though. $10000 would be about my limit.

  10. thanks for the offer. I may PM you nearer the time. I will be travelling to Richmond while I'm there. $10.000 is about my max.

  11. It is nice isn't it.

  12. Yes indeed.
I doubt there will ever be anything that nice in my stable but its nice to have something to drool over once in a while. ;)

It's been in there for 3 weeks so the seller is probably flexible on his price although the "any credit card accepted" line is a little unusual for a private party ad. You have nothing to lose by contacting him and asking for more pics and info if you like it. Good luck...

'55 & '56 Chevrolets are good candidates for RHD conversions. The dash is the same on both sides. [IMG]
The guys in Oz have done many, one company actually offers a kit with the steering parts. Not part of the OP's post, however it could be helpful later.

Be sure and do a thorough check for rust .A few years ago a customer and good friend brought me a 57 Chevy 2 door he had bought in Virginia from a supposed reliable vintage car dealer. He paid too much for it and it turned out to be a cobbled up rust bucket. It took many hours and dollars to straighten it out. New trunk pan, new tail piece, new lower 1/4's, floor pans. It had all been hidden with body filler and undercoating.
just take your time and look them over closely. My friend bought with his heart and not with his head.

  22. Thanks for the info but I have no intention at all of changing it to right hand drive. I might as well buy one of our own makes like a Ford Zephyr or Zodiac but I want to progress to something bigger & better.

  23. Thanks for the advice. I won't be rushing into anything without a good look first.

Have you contacted anyone there about a car yet? If so what happened?

  25. I haven't contacted anyone yet. I think it is a bit too early. I still have over 3 1/2 weeks until I arrive & I don't want anyone feeling obliged to keep the car because I said I was coming over & wanted to see it. I'd feel a bit guilty if they missed out on a sale because of me.

I don't think you have to worry about that. Nobody in their right mind is going to tell potential buyers that they have to wait a couple of weeks because some guy is coming over from England to look at it. You should acquire as much info and as many pics as possible on any cars that interest you and if they're still available when you get here go look at them. If they're sold then keep looking...
