Playing with the temp gauge on my 56 car and looking for the part number for the "voltage limiter" used on 57-59 car. Tried my local auto parts but they keep coming up with a voltage regulator not what I am looking for. I know Macs and others cary it, just wanting to pick it up locally. Thanks. Gerry
Did you take a look at this post, it may have some info that'll help: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=18650
1956 Fords used a full 12 volts to the gauges. As far as I know, this was the only year they did that; all others were 6 volts and beginning in'57 they used the constant voltage regulator mentioned in the post above. Having said that, the device you seek is what is known as a Runtz voltage drop. Maybe Radio Shack can help, but I doubt it. Carpenter has them for sure.
What I am trying to do is a conversion. I have a 302 and want to use my 56 guage, need the limiter to use with the 302 motor and 57 temp gauge converted to fit the 56 dash. make sense?
NAPA does list them, someone posted the NAPA part number long ago but look up the part in the Mac's catalog and you will find the Ford part number which they may be able to cross reference.
If you are even slightly handy with a soldering iron try this trick. It's a lot cheaper than the CVR from Macs. Uses LM7806 voltage regulator. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448589 Regards
If you are using the stock gauge, you do not need a voltage limiter. The 56 gauges are 12 volt, the only year Ford used 12 volt gauges up until the 70's. What you need to do is use the 56 sending unit, which is compatible with the gauge. Do not use the later sending unit as it it not compatible with the gauge. You do not need a runtz drop with the stock gauge.
If you still want the voltage drop, the regulator is the same as a "limiter." . This is what you want. It does the same thing as a voltage drop, in that it limits the voltage to about 5.6 volts so I understand..
the voltage drop they used on dashs well into the 80s posibly 90s, and its availible at the parts store if you can find someone who knows how to actualy use a book.
rockauto.com has 'em Not cheap but available - AIRTEX / WELLS Part # 1V1006 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=942108
Thanks for all the input. Monday morning I'll head over to Radio Shack and see if they have the parts to fab up the limiter, for the price it's worth the try, If not the part number is on e bay for 19.95, but on the web I find it from 25.00 to 60.00 dollars. Macks $23.95, Concourse $24.95. Again thanks to all for the help.
The proper name for the the part is "instrument voltage regulator" which is one reason some of the parts dummys can't find it here is an NOS part http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1957-FO...s=63&clkid=7258615748618853600#ht_1804wt_1181
The lm7806 is about $2 but will require a heat sink. A little bit more work but way below the cost of everything else out there. The link I posted earlier how's how easy it is. Regards
Thanks I ordered the regulators and diode this morning. .50 each on the regulators and .50 each on diodes. I will let you know how I make out. Thanks again. Gerry
