I have a 1950 ford f1 pickup that was chaged to 12 volts. The bearings in the generator that was installed had gone bad so I replaced with rebuilt generator. Before replacement the voltage regulator started clicking. Now with new generator the regulator is still clicking. The clicking is from the voltage limiter at the "ARM" conection. Is there a way to adjust the voltage regulator to stop the clicking?
From memory I think the clicking is actually normal for voltage regulators. You could try replace it with a solid state one and see if that helps (if it isn't one already).
I don't believe there is. The "clicking" is the points in the regulator opening and closing and that is normal. They don't "regulate" if the points don't open and close when they need to.
They should click as they regulate, but if they are clicking too fast there's a problem in the system. I've seen them really chatter if the voltage isn't adjusted properly.
Try 'polarizing' the generator. The most common way is to remove the wire from the "F" terminal on the regulator and touch it briefly to the "B" terminal. It'll spark. Then put the wire back where it belongs. This is another forum discussing this issue. And about five different ways of doing it.
