Get a shopbitch job at a diesel shop. You'll learn more there than you will at a school. And you get paid, instead of paying for it.

I hire for a large aerospace company in socal and have found that UTI produduces a higher quality mechanic. But either school will let in anybody even if they have no buisness being there! I think it's what you get out of it based off of your effort. BTW- I started in a VW/off road shop as the "gofer", left there as the manager after 5 yrs and came to my current position- aircraft mechanic and now, 13 years later, a supervisor over about 150 mechanics....all with no schooling. Not that I would discourage school but if your motivated you can do it yourself. Many of these guys on here were from an era where there was no tech or trade schools...it was sink or swim.

This is the route I recommend, I went to school for hot rods and painting at wyotech and after getting out I still only got offered the same job that I would have gotten without schooling, the only difference is now I get to pay $250 a month to my student loans, at that price I would have rather started out at a beginner level (like I did anyway) and financed a hot rod, at least when I was done paying for the car I could sell it and get some money back unlike my student loans.

SCC has a diesel/heavy machinery program. It's got to be cheaper than either of those schools and it's right here in town. The facility there is pretty nice, Tinbender teaches auto body there and I've been to the shop a few times with him.

    None of them!!!

Beg for any job in a shop that does the kind of stuff you like and bust your ass!!! Once in, take classes at the community college.

The money will come later, or you'll have the skills to open your own shop and deal with the headaches.

i went to the local technical school, lots of people who didnt know what a wrench was got the same degree i did. It was more about what i wanted to learn than what they had to teach. I was a shop bitch while attending, and that probably helped more than schooling did (learn by doing). the school advertised a lot more than they could deliver. I had to spend a lot of time working around the idiots that didnt want to be there. I learned how to figure things out on my own, which was the most valuable lesson there is.

  20. Two of my buddies:

One went to WyoTech. He got a job several years later in the "automotive industry" as a parts room person @ a Chevy dealership...

The other one did whatever he could @ a shop, soaked up knowledge, proved himself, now has a job as mechanic and is going to community college, on his employers dime, to get the papers.

Knowledge, ambition, and know how still outweights a degree.

  21. I learned how to clean a floor real good at Wyotech. I also learned that I hate Wyotech faggots and their faggoty 4x4s. That's all I really remember. I was a diesel mechanic for 8 years, I went to Wyotech for collision/refinishing, go figure. I went to school so I didn't have to be a diesel mechanic anymore. I did get a job in a paint shop for about a year, I told the owner that I had a Wyotech diploma, and he started me at $8.00 dollars an hour. Fuck Wyotech, save your money and learn a trade on your own, almost 26,000 dollars for nine months, and I still had to teach myself how to paint. Anyone who says they learned anything there was a fucking idiot to begin with. There you go, true story.

20k for 9 months or 20k in tools that will make you a lot more.I had a friend that worked in a Mazda dealer, he said hey we're looking for somebody why don't you apply, that was 10 years ago now I'm an ASE master,VW specialist, and a senior Mazda tech, all on the dealers dime.Right now at our dealer we're looking for a tech, but we're finding out ambition is hard to come by.Anybody out there?

as i said before the schooling if free to me no out of pocket so why the fuck not!? those kinds of jobs are hard to come by around here. so i thought that a school degree would help out some.. its very hard to get a job at a dealerhsip, when you dont know jack shit. from some of the videos shot by students at the schools they look liek theres alot of shit to learn on there. it would also seem that how much you learn is how much you pay attention if your slacking off partying palying grab ass you probably wont learn anything.

  24. Oh so you learned how to put a new patch panel over a rotted rocker with adhesive. Or do they just teach that at the one in Laramie? :)

Look into Pittsburg State in Kansas. They have one of the top automotive programs in the country. I was going to transfer there, but didn't when I got my job with the Blue Oval.

Worst case, at least you'll be close to the HAMB drags!!!!

SCC, They used to have a great program, and most likely still do from what I've heard. I've known a couple of past instructors there, and they were top notch. Give it a look, it's right here!

oh fuck it, was a bad idea to begin with, one of the big reasons for "going" to school was to get out of this fucking shithole known as spokane, sorry but it sucks here guys.... thanks for the advice guys
