    I'm (it wants to go bold for some reason) thinking that either that one or a similar one was in Popular mechanix or Mechanics illustrated back when.

    There have been some small blocks cut down into Less cylinder V engines to fit into various land speed classes over the years and I would assume that one reason for doing it was off the shelf internal speed parts . Meaning that things like high compression pistons for a small block of X size didn't cost much but custom pistons for some other engine with the same cubic inches did. 283 divided by 4 - 70.75 and that would compete with a Harley 74 in a bike chassis.
