My 53 Chevy has been at the shop since August. Money saved payment made and still not done. I chose a veteran to chop my top a guy named George in Sedona Az. I looked at other people in the state and he was the best choice. I was growing impatient and learned his mother and mother-in law passed away in the same month. I can't fault him for that. I went and saw him on Friday and that wait is worth it.

Wow...what a way to start off on the wrong foot.

    I'm impressed.

  3. Kopperhead53 - Are you saying you figured out he's had alot going on in his life and you forgive him... or, that, he's a deadbeat and we should avoid, at all cost, taking our shitbox to George in Sedona, AZ...?

People's shit sits in my shop, too. I'm a busy guy... AND... I'm a deadbeat.

People need to realize a couple things in hiring out custom work.
    1) You probably aren't his only customer.

    2) Shit happens.

    3) If you don't want to wait... Do It Yourself.

Maybe give a "before" shot so we can see how George's work ends up looking... and give him our best on the loss of two of his family members.
It's a good thing that didn't get in the way of the work he was doing for you.

kustombuilder, this is in no way directed to you or anyone in particular, but lousy customer relations is my pet peeve and this rant is directed to small business people in general who think they're doing their customers a favor by selling their products / services.

I spent 38 years in various guises of Customer Service (Service Rep, Customer Training, Service desk, etc.) for a machine tool manufacturer. My company sold major (i.e. $100k - $2+ millions of dollars per) machine tools to the automotive, aircraft, and jobber industry, so I guess I can comment on "Customer Service".

Pressure ?.....you don't know what fucking pressure is, until you have a G.M. VP calling you because a machine is down and they're about ready to shut down a line and send several hundred people home, because your machine is broke down. Never mind they've ignored maintenance, used 2nd rate repair parts and installed them incorrectly - YOUR machine is down!! If I ever dreamed that the customer was inconveniencing ME, my ass would have been fired on the spot. Believe me, I know what pressure is.

Having said that, it really pisses me off, when I try to give somebody my business and I get treated like I'm doing 'em a favor! I don't expect to be wined & dined, but I expect to be treated with respect. Is business tough? - damn straight it is, but without the customer, the business wouldn't exist. I think it's a no-brainer for business operators to wake up and figure out who butters their fucking bread. If the pressure's too much, than stop taking on more work that can't be handled or making promises thatu can't be kept. And for Christ's sake, take the f'ng chip off the shoulder, because it shows real plain when talking to the guy that's paying your heat, light, and rent. Are customers sometimes assholes? - you bet they are, but they pay the bills and keep the businesses going. Old saw, but true today as always, the customer is always right, even when they're wrong. If you don't think so, maybe you ought to work for somebody, instead of getting pissed off in your own shop.

Maybe poor service is why so many small business failue.

OK, I'm off the pedestal.........sorry for the rant - feel much better now......thanks [IMG]

I've paid the bills for almost 30 years bumping and painting...maybe one or two problems in that time. You can't please everyone, but you can come close. The biggest problem I've seen with customers getting things done by body shops is that most shops take on too much work....worried that they will lose the job...or just plain greedy. I've finished a BUNCH of projects for people when the original contractor blew it. I like doing these projects....they are usually so pissed spending money and getting nothing in return, all I have to do is work...and they are happy.

  9. I'm just a slob -but when I bid a top chop I have this to present to my customer:
[1]the price is 2000.00 and up depending on the tricks requested [IMG]
[2] the turn a round time is always two-three weeks.
SOME people can kill time PROFESSIONALLY [IMG] [IMG]

  10. You're dead right.

    Good luck to you though.

OK guys and Gal. I understand why it is taking so long to chop my sweety. I am growing impatient because it is my sweety and looks so damn good. Thank you for all the input, I really enjoy reading all the replys. He is doing a fantastic job. He is not a shop but a craftsman, so i relaize it will take awhile.Ever seen a cheap, bad, poorly planned chop that only took a week to complete. Yes, we all have and yes it is chopped but does look perfect. Hey guys thanks for all the feedback. I am just under stress with VIVA around the corner. Paint my wagon, swap enjines in the wagon and get glass in my sweety.

I'll tell you what gets me. that's when a shop owner takes on a job and doesn't feel ANY obligation to the customer. If a better job or one that interests him more comes in the door then your job just sits. Some shop owners just can't say NO and the shop fills up with unfinished projects while the new ones just keep on coming. I know of shops that have jobs that were sarted well over a year ago that are now sitting and 3-4 more recent jobs are also making no progress because the owner can't/won't stay focused or say no to new potential customers. Usually the newer jobs are more interesting or the owner feels more obligation to a newer customer so the older jobs are just gathering dust and taking up room. I don't care how CUSTOM a job is it still only takes so much time to complete and the shop owner is obligated to at least know the basics of his trade and be able to adjust the shop work load so that projects are completed in a timely manner. Just because you hang a sign out front or use the term that says custom/Kustom whatever if you don't get the work done you're just a wannabe jackoff in my opinion and all of the fancy terms and braging in the world won't change that until you get off your ass and do something.
I've made my living for over 30 years whoring myself out to whoever had the cash and needed something done. I'll admit there were projects that almost got the best of me, but I wonder if you will find an old customer of mine that wouldn't drop off his new project tomorrow if I just gave the go ahead. the phone calls I keep getting suggest that at least a few of them would.

I can't quite wrap my head around a guy using the word "sweety" (sweetie if we're spelling correctly) this many times in one post, referring to his car....

I find it a bit odd....
