Wake up ! It's time, Sept 2009 Banger meet

  1. Shots of my choke rod cobble job- used a piece of brake tube and a hardware store spring and washer. Had to have it in a hurry, otherwise I'd have bought a repop as they are are cheap enough. The brake tubing was a perfect fit.

Just got done messing with the pickup again. I decided to pull the carb and see if I could swap it with another. Once i pulled it off, I realized they were both Zenith's, but slightly different. Note the fuel inlet on the 2 carbs. Anyways, the fuel line did not want to snug up on the new carb, so I dissasembled the OG thinking I could use the top. Well, once apart, I noticed a cracked sleeve inside. See pics...

So I took my coupe over to the brake line shop, and we fabbed up a fuel line for the new carb-sediment bowl. Also, I just put a small hose clamp on the choke cable. Brake line, now thats a good idea! Heres what it looked like today...

That cracked "sleeve" is actually your "removeable" venturi. I can see how that would create some issues.

  9. Engine: 30W non-detergent, I get mine at a farm store and add a pint of ZDDP to it.
Model A's don't turn too many rpm's, but you're still running flat tappets. It may not be neccisary, but I've seen what new low ZDDP oils can do to cams in newer motors and I prefer to err on the side of safety. Trans and Rear: 600W available thru most Model A parts distributors- it's not as thick as Henry's paste, but it'll do. If you are removing old "fluids" from the trans and rear, they can be as thick as toothpaste. It's advisable to warm them either by driving around for a while, or by pointing a small space heater at it for a few hours. I've seen guys use a salamander heater on the rear before. When I pulled the plug to drain my rear for the first time, nothing came out but a black paste stuck to the plug. I figured it was dry but my geezer buddies knew better so we heated it up and it ran right out.

If you want to see how thick the trans oil is, even warm, look at what drops out of the trany at the end of this video:

  12. Ouch! Makes me glad I'm too chicken sh*t to drive my rpu 120 miles to Newport. My buddies are always riding me because I trailer it, but if this was to happen, at least I'd have a way home.

  13. Do they make Viagra for headlamps? Or maybe Zoloft?

Thats some black gold! Looks pretty thick!

  15. They didn't have zinc in most oils until after the overhead V8 came out. I don't believe there were any additives until the early "40"'s. Most early additives were primarily to make the oil pour when it was cold. During WW2 most "A"'s were run on reclaimed oil. Another comment, when I was in High School in the late 40"s I and some of my buddies worked in service station's and most model "A"'s had 90 wt oil in the trans and rear end. Of course no one knew any different and they just threw their heads back and drove as fast as they could go.

I know what you mean. I drove mine to the event this year (100 miles round trip) and I was totally babying it on the hill when I got there. Something about wanting to get home kept gnawing away at my better judgment.

My last practice pass is @ 4:50 mark in this video.

My fastest run of the 4 I ran was 9.90 @ 50.8 mph.

  19. Thanks for the great show Crazydaddyo! These are getting me so stoked for next week!
What's the story on that head?

    Thanks for the kind words.

The head I'm running now is a Weiand flat head that I c.c 'd out to be 7.68:1 comp. The combustion chamber is similar to a "Crows Foot" Winfeild..

  22. Oops! I wasn't paying close enough attention. I meant the one in the older pics, the one with the Arden valve cover.

The Ardun head isn't anything the the Duntov's had anything to do with. It is made by Norm Frick in Colorado. It has a hemi combustion chamber, but the valves are not canted. From what I know the Ardun valve cover is the only thing that this head has in common with the V-8 heads. I had to replace 75% of the valve train within the first 150 miles because the oiling holes in the rocker shafts were not drilled into the oil pasage and the rockers werent getting oil. Also the "roller tips" were riding on soft steel pins that had worn half through in that same time. I replaced all of that with hardened shafts and roller bearings which solved the problems I had with the head.

That head is on a 3/8" stroked A engine that has broken two cranks and is now sitting on a wood dolly in my garage. The last failure took out the rear main cap and it will have to be line bored when a new crank is put in it.

I didn't put it on the B block that is in my car now because it is not pressurized and I don't want to run that head without at least 15 psi oil pressure.

Ok, a couple things. I drained that 600 snot out of my trans. Are some fine metallics in the oil a byproduct of "normal operation"??

I put the Lucas 140 in it, and I have to say, I was astonished!!! Not only was my second gear noise GONE.........but, the car felt like it ran much smoother, upshifted with ease, and down to second gear was much easier!!!

I got 2 qts, so I'm gonna drain out what's in there now ( kinda like a flush ), and refill.

Well, only one week of cruisin' left for me! It's gonna suck!!!! Maybe I can at least go out to the garage and look at her after a couple weeks.....

  27. Thanks for the warning.

  28. Why no more cruisin?

Well, I went for my pre-op consult, and the doc says there's only a 20% chance of success with the procedure.......says I'll probably never work again!!! That's not gonna happen! I'm getting a 2nd-3rd opinion. He told me to consider a nerve ablation, basically killing the nerves at the facet joints.

In the mean time, I'll take my meds & keep cruisin'!!!
