Anyone have experience with using these clamps to connect two sections of an exhaust system? I am thinking about using these instead of two bolt flanges, as the pipes would be easier to remove from my "through the holes in the frame" installation.

    Thanks,

I've used those wide band clamps, but I prefer V-Band Clamps.

You weld these to the pipes...

    Then you use this clamp...

To have a perfect seal like this...

I used these on my 33 chevy coupe, they aren't a tight joint so I had to wrap the pipes in asbestos tape, really good if you have to take the pipes apart very much. Where are you getting two bolt flanges or are you making your own?

I have used them. I use a reducer on the pipe, so one goes inside the other, under the clamp. Just better support/seal.

I'd use these if I were starting from scratch but I mistakenly ordered/bought some of these Walker clamps and need to use them if they are worth a spit.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Same sort of clamp used on big semi trucks for many years. Make sure the pipe underneath is clean then tighten up till the bolts bottom out and the band stretches out. These are "one time use" clamps. Worked for me many times.

Yeah, I've used them once or twice with reasonable luck.

My wife's 540i now has an exhaust leak where BMW used that style clamp to connect a warranty-replacement catalyst assembly to the rear exhaust section, of course that was ten years and 120K miles ago. One of the things I was supposed to fix last week while I had that car on the lift, but didn't get around to it...

On the V-band clamp, if at all possible you want to offset the end of the pipe so that one side sticks out a small distance (1/8in or so) from its half of the flange, with the other pipe inset a corresponding distance into its half. This obviously isn't always possible, if you've got something that needs to slide in sideways between two rigidly-mounted sections for instance, but if you can it will make aligning the flange halves easier upon assembly.

Go to NAPA and ask for a tube of 35959 Walker AcoustiSeal and put some of that on it and reinstall.
