Hello, I have been working on my 56 Chevy and I have received a lot of good help here. My latest question is about keeping my pedal starter. I really wanna keep it. I swapped the 3 speed for a 700r4 transmission and therefore, I have lost the bell housing that the solenoid that the pedal starter attaches to. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Is there an aftermarket bracket? Thanks
I don't know about being able to save the pedal, but it might be easier to mount and wire a starter switch from a John Deere 50 to the floor where the pedal used to be. Just thinkin' out loud...
put the manual transmission back in, and you'll get your starter pedal back. You could cheat and put in a Ford starter pedal from the 30s, but just wire it to the small SOL wire on the starter.
Modify the original bracket to mount with the transmission mounting bolts, or make an adapter bracket. You might consider this option. Use a starter with an electric solenoid. Mount an electric starter button (pedal) on the floor to replace the original. Wire the starter through the button.
A fake electric floor switch would be better. Those foot assembly’s were hell for stout mounting on 2 machined places on the cast iron bellhousing. If the teeth on the starter did not line up with the teeth on the flywheel you had to put a lot more foot pressure on the assembly to reach the contacts, then the starter moved enough to spring in meshing the gears to start. That would be tough for a steel mounting bracket on the trans-to-engine bolts. Plus the angle of the 700R4 is different than the old housing.
You should be able to wire a starter to a foot switch, same as you would wire up a race car dash start switch. Not quite sure how to make it work, but a relay would prevent the need to run full power to the foot switch.
