Hey, I have recently bought aa 1957 Buick Century. It has already reminded me just how completely ft drum brakes ****, so I want to change to discs. When searching I really dont find much/any kits. Anyone know where/ if I can find a ft disc conversion kit? 15in kelsey-Hayes wires . Thx!
Just a couple thoughts. First, did/does the car have the finned aluminum drums, which were possibly an option. Second, are they early wires or later aftermarket ones. The reason I ask is some conversions won’t fit early wheels (they interfere). If it’s the big aluminum drums, the problem may be the linings. Those were good brakes when new. I did a disc conversion with a friend to clear early wheels. The rotors and calipers were small for clearance, and the damn thing doesn’t stop much better than the drums did. It was also an original treadlevac car, and the pedal linkage ratios weren’t right either. It was a Chevy, so more available probably than a Buick, and still screwed up. Just traps you can fall into, leading to bad results. Many of the “kits” are just parts thrown in a box. Read the number of brake problem here. Really nice ride. Enjoy.
@Keith Brooks first post, welcome to the HAMB. Listen to @miker98038 . The reason you couldn't find a kit at Speedway Motors on the first page of search results is probably because there isn't a cheap, easy off the shelf answer. Whoever you contact should provide answers to all the pitfalls he mentioned BEFORE you send a penny. I'd also ask any sales or order person for the tech line and see how quickly they answer the phone and how helpful they are.
