I have a 1961 Thunderbird with a 390 Edelbrock 600 cfm carb.here is my problem my car starts find when its cold but when I go on a descent trip like 30 min or so it will start up fine right after I get were Im going but if I try about 45 min to a 1 hour or longer it doesn't want to fire right up.It will turn over fine but fire and by the time it does want to fire the carburetor is flooded if I hold down the gas at this point it fires right up.Any ideas on what I am dealing with I just not sure where to start.Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.Gary
2 thoughts. 1) after it sits a while, the gas is either boiling out of the carb or leaking out of the carb. This can cause an engine flooded condition and can also cause an empty carb condition. Next time, before you try to start it, pull the air filter and determine if there is gas in the carb. If there is no gas, you probably have to turn it over until you refill the carb. If there is gas, you probably need to put the pedal to the floor right off to clean it out to start. A rebuild of the carb may help. 2) when you try to start it, your flooding it. Many people instantly try starting a car by pumping the gas. A well tuned car with a good carb usually starts by cranking it without stepping on the gas after it has been warmed up once the same day. We need to know a little more before we can help you out. Like stock fuel pump, electric pump, running regulator, set at what pressure, have you ever looked into the carb after it's hot and is the gas coming out in the primaries or secondaries?
