WARNING - Avoid travel on I-40 between TN and NM !

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by trulyvintage, Jan 29, 2010.

  1. This is shaping up to be the worst winter
in more than 30 years for transport.

Covenant Trucking group, which covers several
truck lines operating nationally, has pulled
drivers off of Interstate 40 between
Nashville, TN and Santa Rosa, NM.

That decision is based upon DOT road closures
in several states & feedback from
    OTR discretionary company drivers.

I pulled off yesterday near Nashville, TN.

Anyone thinking of taking I-40 between
NM and TN should wait until this Sunday.

    Jim, be careful out there.....

  4. I-40 closed yesterday both directions out of Amarillo at 12 noon.
Freezing rain with snow on top.
I-40 closed thru Texas panhandle yesterday afternoon by DOT.

I am waiting out this storm in a truck stop
    outside Nashville, TN.

The shutdown I referenced just came in to a driver here a few
minutes ago, the trucks are streaming in.

I-40 is the center of alternating freezing rain and snow
expected to last until Saturday evening.

Up to 12 inches of snow expected in Nashville, TN today.

Tenn. isnt prepaired for "real" winter, I got a friend down there and he said when it snows a few inches its like hell has been unleashed upon them.
mountainous roads are extreamly trecherous..and the twisty turny roads become very dangerous.
also the natives are not schooled in the art of driving in it..mostly..they normally dont need to know , because it isnt the norm for them.

snow plows and salt trucks are not a common sight in Tenn.

and as said before..ICE is Ice..its dangerous no matter where you live
7 years on the road as a truck driver before i decided to do something else, been to almost every state in the USA.. weather like this is white knuckle heart stopping waste of time..be safe out there find a nice warm truck stop and waitress with a nice smile and hot coffee and sit it out

This lousy storm is passing to the south of us.We've gotten a taste of ol' man winter a few times this year and I feel for the drivers out in that crud.
    Safe travels....

What gets you is the lack of plows and de Icing trucks.

Judging from the accidents I've witnessed in person and seen on TV, northern folks aren't as invincible as they think they are. Driving in winter weather ain't nothing to take lightly no matter where you are.

P.S. most southern US municipalities and highway authorities aren't equipped to deal with snow / sleet, they don't have salt trucks and snow plows to keep the roads clear. About all they can really do is spray the roads with salt brine, spread some sand / gravel mix and hope for the best.

You guys be careful down there.

  14. Snow is predicted East on I-64 all the way to my home in Richmond, VA. Supposed to start tonight and snow all day tomorrow, predicted accumulation is 4-9 inches. It will be a mess. We just don't know what to do with it.

At any given time of the year... there is at least 50 miles of construction on I40. Seriously... it's so heavily traveled that they are working on it and it's a never ending project. There's always problems somewhere on I40!!!

My waitress yesterday was leaving Tulsa to drive to Southern CA to attend a funeral. Hope she didn't have her own.

About 23 years ago I left work at the machine shop where I worked at in memphis, tn, It was 5:00 pm didn't get home till 10:00 pm because the majority of the people didn't know how to drive in the stuff, they just could not figure out how to get off the off ramps, half way up slide back down, got really old fast. Usually only took me 30 minutes to get home.

  19. Boy, whatchutalkinbout! Don't you know 50% of the population here drives diesel 4x4s with lift kits and 38.5" tires? It's the hillbilly way! :D
Seriously, your pal's right---all the transplants can't drive when it flurries here.....all us natives just stay at the house;)

Brine trucks salted the roads here WEDNESDAY  TDOT was loading out salt shakers at 3:30 am in preparation.

All that.......and the updated forecast is 2-4" possible today, 4-6" total tomorrow.

I'm 50mi NE of Nashville.....we've had NOTHING but teeeny tiny flurries off and on. Some of us don't panic till the truck won't move;)

  20. Naw, up here we are smart enough to stay off the roads!:D:p

  21. Damn, I haven't seen the news in a while I guess. Glad it missed us up north here.

they are calling for 6-12inches here in the foothills of the NC mountains today/tomorow. i live about 4 miles off I40 and about 2 miles off HWY321 whatever weather front is coming through it tends to "follow" these roadways. I40 is already partially closed near the nc/tenn border due to rockslide cleanup from 3 months ago. oddly enough even though i'm that close to 2 major roads since i'm outside city limits the roads near me are usually among the last to be plowed and my street i think was actually plowed once in the five years i've lived here. sucks since i have a STEEP drive. it usually takes about an hour of shoveling/de-icing/cussin'/ spinnin'/cussin'/throwin' stuff/cussin' since it always freezes over even in a light snow due to the drive being lined with trees. god i just reminded myself what sat/sun and probably mon are gonna be like...ken....

Two years ago I went to the Detroit Autorama and got caught in a blizzard somewhere around Dayton, Ohio. Thank god for rumble strips, I followed them to Detroit.

Same here, I'm 90 miles east of Nashville. Pretty much nothing so far. They did close the schools today before there was even a snowflake on the ground

All they have to do is mention snow around here and they're out spraying the roads for 3 days. No shortage of salt trucks in TN for sure.

I'm with Mike I'll worry about when it gets here.

  26. Here in NE Ark. we have a coat of ice covered with 6 in of snow and its still coming down. I made the decision not to take the peterbuilt to Illinois yesterday. Durn glad i didnt go. The truck will stay parked until this clears up. I seen a thread over on The TOPIX Forum they clain glowbull warming is to blame for this weather:eek: ? Everybody stay warm, stay safe dont drive unlessyou absoultly have to. :) OldWolf

I40 is closed at the state line of NC and TN due to a severe rock slide about 2-3 months ago. Not going to be open for quite a while yet!

  29. Shot from parking lot in Fairview a few minutes ago.
    I-40 just closed at bridge.
Trucks can't pull in to park.

This region does not have equipment or resources
to deal with this type of winter storm.
