    Hey,

Socal Hambers watch out! I saw today that the California Highway
Patrol has reactivated its roadside random equipment and smog
sniffer SS Jackboot stompin' inspections. Yes, it's the seventies all
over again, only they have a new twist....a rolling dyno and smog
    sniffer wands.
Damit! time ta put the cats. & the dumb chip back on the daily.

As a side note, modern honeycomb cats are NOT a restriction in the exhaust like the old bead style. they flow at least as well as most performance mufflers and do not hurt performance. Name brand cats like Random Tech and Magnaflow actually flow nearly as well as straight pipe.

Im not in C.A., but isn't it nice to see where your tax dollars go?
*rolls eyes* why bother it didn't work before.

  13. sorta, they have no emission standards for pre '65 just equipment standards. but you can run a '30 with a '57 392 hemi as long as it has the '57 smog equipment which is nothing...........it's really a grey area if you need to fight a ticket.

Would someone please explain to me "why" any car guy or gal would want to live in the Republic of Kalifornia? Granted, Ohio sux in many ways but we can do ANYTHING to our cars that we want plus it's cheap to live here. Smog inspection? Only in a very few counties and not required for cars 25 years of age or older. Cats? Whack 'em off because no State Trooper is gonna look to see if you have them or not. Historic tags? Legal on any car 25 or older, cost $20, are good until 2050 and YOM tags are fine. They don't even have to look nice. Go-fast parts, lowering or most anything else? Totally cool! Even if you drive a beater that consumes 5 quarts of oil a day and has rust holes big enough to run a Great Dane through, nobody would give you a second glance. I don't want to make anybody cry, so I won't tell you that my property taxes cost me much less per half year than you Kalifornians pay per week nor that I bought a 4 year old house complete with a finished and heated 24X30 shop for $84K.

  19. You can't bitch about living in Cali. I think that's what keeps them there.

  20. to me that's the key word "heated" which means snow, which means no driving the hot rod during the winter unless a light snow fall. here you don't even need a heater or a/c......no bugs, no twisters and no "few months" of good weather it's good all year round.

greated the people suck and they keep coming, the more people make the cities more snobby and crackdown on old cars on the property more. seems to me there's always someone on here (in different states) that is having a problem with the city/township and thier cars. i'll stick it out until i retire (haha distant future), sell and move somewhere away from public view.

Smog laws are about clean air, Us cali folks know dirty air. So while you country boys shiver at least you got clean air. Your old car does not need cats here is SoCal as previously stated above. So no biggie to my 70 elco. Clean air coming from the tailpipe of the modern masses is a good thing IMHO.
My 99 volvo failed smog because the 800 dollar abs sensor triggered a check engine light. (it ran clean as a whistle but the check engine light made it fail) that is not a good thing. Still trying to get that swedish sweetie to pass. Yeah, Yeah, it's my wifes car.
The smog nazis are here to stay. Best way to fight it is join one of those sema groups or drive an old car everyday.

Yep, snow and cold is a downer but that's when we drive the '53 Chevys, '55 Fords, '59 Chevys and such. I'm building my '64 Ford to be a year around car. If something rusts, I'll fix it. Like I said, Ohio is far from perfect but at least we don't have to worry about rolling dynos, visual equipment inspections and such. I live in a small city in a decent neighborhood and have had 2 confrontations with the Yard Poleece in 4 years. One was over a half cut up circle burner on my trailer that I planned to scrap anyway. The other was over a rotted out Suburban that I hadn't tagged in two years. The neighbor got a stupid hair up his ass, called zoning, I tagged it but told him STRONGLY (extreme pain was mentioned) to leave me the fuck alone as did my roomie and that solved the problem. Granted, we have Ohio State Bill 560 as was mentioned here last week hanging over our heads, but after writing all of our state congressmen, getting positive responses from most and calling several, I don't believe that this bill will ever pass as was originally drafted if at all Granted, I'd love endless summer too but not at the expense of living in a police state.

You guys arnt really thinking this through are you?
There not out to be a pain in the ass. (its a pain in the ass for them to go through all the trouble just to give a ticket)

Its the STATE trying to clean our AIR. Trying to reduce the emmisions is nothing new, why are you guys so shocked?

There not only getting on everyday people, big rigs are soon going to have to pass a "smog test".

I know this cause I work for a California school district as a diesel mechanic. The state and other agencies have given a verry large grant to convert our fleet of 112 buses to bio diesel. Our district is in the top five biggest in the state. Thats ALOT of black smog being reduced by switching to bio-diesel.

Now imagine if all our cars and trucks burned cleaner. Think about it, really. This is a good thing.

That must be somewhere out in the desert....It's going for at least double that on up in the city.

Can you ride a bicycle along an Ocean beach bike trail in shorts and a T shit and watch young women play Volleyball still in string bikinis in Ohio this time of year like I did today?

Yea, the Smog Nazis suck, especially since they end up mostly victimizing poor people just trying to get by in life.

Any CHP posts of where they are setting up the sniffers?
    Official or underground?

  26. Eh, global warming is a myth presented by people with huge egos to think that 400 years of industrial development can cause huge changes in the earth when one volcano thousands of years ago put so much crap in the air the whole planet was covered in sooty haze for 17 years.

You can mess up the air a lot - it will come back, it has before. If the temperature's going to rise a bunch, or fall a bunch, nothing you or I can do will stop that. Ask the dinosaurs -

    Couldn't be more wrong.

The smog laws in California are all about revenue generation for the state. I lived in SoCal for 35 years. I've seen the growth of the "smog inspection industry". Guys who can barely speak English take a class, invest several thousand dollars in equipment and open up a smog test only shop. They're everywhere. Forty five bucks for five minutes of "work".

Modern cars are 90% cleaner than the cars of even 25 years ago and yet they still want stiffer and stiffer smog laws. Big companies like Unocal are given pollution exemptions for their refineries because they buy and scrap cars that haven't been run on the streets in years.

Just one more of the dozen or so reasons we left!

    HAMBers should be non-polluters.

Portland and Phoenix measure your car as you drive by, and they take a picture. Can't get it registered until you fix it.

the federal laws that made carmakers put cats on cars in 1975, and start using computer controls in 1981, did clean up the air a lot. The testing stuff really doesn't do any good, but it makes folks feel better.

In az there are no smog laws that apply to pre-67 cars, but California had some retrofit programs and stuff....do they still apply?
