COE was there really a 1940 ford coe crew originally?

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by fourspeedwagon, Oct 21, 2011.

  1. There is one for sale on CL listed under Mankato. I saved the pictures from their posting but they are not very good. I've tried to insert them here but only see how to add a website link..
Anyway it says 3 door crew with all 4 roll up windows, etc. Just curious if anyone is aware of these?

Yes they were made but not by General Motors. They were sent off to another body mfgr. to be converted. Most of them also had a 4W/D conversion as well. They were made for the railroads and utility co's mostly. The 3 door units had the 3rd door on the p*** side. Fabmancoe was in the process of buying an original but don't know if the sale went through. He might chime in on it.

Oh BTW Ford and Dodge did the same thing. I wished I knew who the body conversion company was.

  4. I should've known it must've been some sort of conversion. Looks like it was done back then though. And it is a four wheel drive rig too. Thanks Donn

Yes, they were converted when new. Nice work as well. I looks just like the factory originaly made them. I offen wonder how far they were built before being shipped to the conversion co? A regular Cab and Ch***is or some stage of production like the cowl, fenders, hood and doors?

Most of the 4 w/d's were converted by Marmon-Herrington but I am sure there were other companys doing it as well.

I have been doing some research on this subject. I think Armbruster did stretch vehicles for GM like lemos and air port busses.

Here is what I think that did the crew cab conversions for both Ford and GM.

Look at the bottom 1/2 right side of the page.

I have been told that in 1940 Ford had sold 9 coe crew cabs for use here at home(most for utility cos) and 11 units for military use..all 4wd and were built by Marmon-herrington. I had been looking at one recently as donn has mentioned..it may be the one you have found? I almost got emotionally attached but was able to back away as it was expensive...I figured I could build one myself for less $...plus I have to many projects to complete first. There may have been other upfitters that built these fords also..the info is hard to come up with. ..These trucks are very cool for sure.
