Was this a deal? Model A dash/cowl

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sandmountainslim, Jun 1, 2009.

  1. Did I get a decent deal on this?
It is what looks to me like a 28 or 29 Model A dash and the top of the cowl.
A gave 20 bucks for it today. It MIGHT be enough to start another project someday.

Thats the gas tank. Worth it if it's a good tank

  3. Cool.
I don't own a Model A but I couldn't turn it down for the price. A little welding and I bet I could make it into a tub.......ALOT of welding I mean to say.

  4. If the other side of the tank ends up being the top part of the firewall it is 28-29.

  5. The guy I got it from offered to trade me part of a Model A cab for my fibergl*** Spirit Industried '23 T body.....I am still thinking on what to do. It is not a complete cab and has rust. It is the complete firewall from one truck and the doors and windshield frame from another. The back half of the cab is missing as is the roof and of course the floor.
What do you fellers think of that? I have been working like crazy on my gl*** T body and already have it primered. I got this dash outfit in case I wanted to try and fab it into something in the future on some project.

Looks like a late 1930 - early 1931 Ford gas tank to me.

The gas cap is threaded if 28-29 and quarter turn if 30-31.

  8. It is threaded.
I wonder if side cowl panels could be made from sheet metal from a Falcon hood.

  9. Have started turning the gas tank into a homebuilt RPU

and gonna try to use the rolled top from the sides of an early fifties Chevy pickup to fashion a two and a half or three foot bed for it whenever we get the sheetmetal work done on the body

    Wish us luck.

That's what I used to think... until I bought a late '29 tank with a 1/4 turn cap bung.

I actually found a 28/29 Cowl on the side of the road that had fallen off someone's truck that is the start of my A V8 project. A deal where "free" is going to get expensive before it is all said and done.

dont know if it was a deal or not , but i like what you are building out of it , start with little and make a lot ,

  16. Found an original A steering wheel and gas cap today for thirty bucks for both.
The A steering wheel is a big 'un but I think it will be suiting to the truck.
I have been lucky and found stuff on the cheap but there is so LITTLE Model A stuff for sale around here it's pathetic.
I am trying to use all the original parts that I can find on the project which I am now calling "The Ghost".

  17. So the 1/4 turn caps actually started in the '29 model year?

Yes, late '29. A lot of things bleed past the model years, and were changed at some point durring the model year on Model A's. One of the most known is the late '31 fuel tank and firewall. Other examples off the top of my head are the early '30 I/P cluster (From '29), The late '31 PU bed (the 'Wide bed') that went into '32, the early '28 park brake handle and steering wheel (red in color)... You get the idea.

  20. We are building it as nice as we can with the parts and money we have.
I have a 1988 2.3 litre Ford engine and trans that we are gonna use and the front end setup from a '48 Ford Coupe and rear end from a '94 F-150 and the frame we built from 2X3 square tubing. Wish I had a Model A grill shell but everyone around here seems to think they are made of gold so I will be using a straight '25 Model T shell that I have.
I suppose I will call it a '28 or '29 Ford when finished even though the cab is entirely home-built save for the upper cowl area and windshield.
How much more "genuine Henry" it is compared to a fibregl*** kit bodies I dunno since so much of it we are building but it feels more real to me since we started with an original fragment and built the rest.
Looking forward to getting back to work on it tomorrow.

  21. In this photo U can see the damage done to the cowl top by someone with a blowtorch at some point in it's history. U can see where we grafted new sheetmetal to the old. Will have to try and smooth this up later on in he project.

I have no idea what kind of idiot would have taken a blowtorch to an early Model A.

Is there anyway to tell from the remaining cowl whether this was a closed or open car originally?

  22. Little bit of sheetmetal work put on today. Hopefully more tomorrow

  23. A bit more work done today but still some bending and smoothing to do.

We got the cowl too damned high once the sheetmetal was on.

Now to work on lowering it a few inches.

  24. Cowl properly lowered.
Set it up on the frame today and decided to use a Model A front axle rather than the '48.

  25. Acquired two schoolbus seat bottoms for ten bucks at a s****yard which I believe will make a nice bench seat for "The Ghost" as we are calling the car.

Plan to go to work with some primer this weekend and hopefully mount the windshield.

  26. She is partially primed. We are calling it "The Ghost". A fellow from the internet has offered to donate a '29 radiator shell to the project to replace the T shell I own.

  27. Traded for a steering column

  28. Now gotta find a pitman arm somewhere...hitting all the known junkyards.

This building an RPU from a cutting torch attacked cowl top ain't easy!
    It's comin' together though.

  29. Seems whether I get it on the road or not....my daughter is really enjoying it
