There has been a bill introduced into the legislature to effectively do away with the benefits of having a collector plate on your vehicle. House Bill 1134 proposes a $30 annual renewal fee for Horseless Carriage and Collector plates. Please read the bill and if you are opposed to this new revenue measure by the state government, you need to contact your representatives in the legislature and let them know how you feel and how you want them to vote on this measure or if they have the horsepower, to kill it. If you don’t know who your legislators are, you can call the legislator Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and leave a short message of perhaps a couple sentences. The Hotline operators can identify your senator and two representatives from your name and address and send the message for you. This bill has already been read on the floor of the House of Representatives and referred to the Committee on Transportation. Hopefully, with enough opposition, it will not make it out of committee. Please share this information with other clubs and any other collector car owners you know. http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?year=2011&bill=1134
I believe rather then "the abuse of the collector plates", more like the state of the economy. Our state is in a serious financial downturn (as are most if not all states). Our state government will be very creative, in new ways/ideas in which they can offset the huge deficits they face. No rock unturned mentality.
I'd have to agree that the lets say "vintage vehicle" plates get pretty well abused by a lot of people in this state. Anything over 25 years old is eligible for a collector plate and that isn't really that old when you take a serous look at it as right now an 86 anything is eligible by it's age. My daily at the moment is 40 years old and I don't consider it a collector vehicle. But the state is hurting for tax revenue and those cars are an obvious place where tax revenue is being byp***ed. If it's a straight 30.00 a year for collector plates (which only comes in a rear plate) I'd go for it just to not have to run a front plate on the 48. It hurts the guy with a batch of vintage cars sitting in the garage that all have collector, horseless carriage or yom plates though. I'll put in my 30.00 worth and contact my areas state reps on it though. Done, one polite email sent out to my three area representatives. Remember to keep your message polite and don't rant.
I just sent a note to my 3 area rep's, one Mary Margaret Haugen is the transportation chair person. I asked her to kill the bill, or at least exempt motor vehicles made prior to 1975 to the fee's. I can't see a 1985 civic as a collector car! Now my 1955 Mercury Wagon will get regular plates, as I plan to drive it daily.
here is who introduced this bill, Dem Fred Finn in 35th district--phone 360 786-7902--EM fred.finn@leg.wa.gov l called, every one else, please step up and kill this garbage of a bill. this is what l EMedto him; [please stop this bill, it is hard enough to build a safe and nice looking hot rod in this economy with out adding more financial burdens. being disabled and on a fixed income this will serously impact my life and hobby. thank you for youre time,] Later
If you can afford a hot rod or collector car than you can afford a lousy $30 to help pay for the roads you drive on. How will that seriously impact your life and hobby? And why should others have to pay more so you can have your free plates? Why should they pay to support your lifestyle? I had to pay $545 for tabs for my first late model car before I-695 p***ed. Now that was unreasonable. But people in some other states are still paying that for their plates. You have it pretty good here in that regard. But some people think everything should be free. It's a sickness that's taken over our culture.
What good is a vintage plate if you have to pay $30 bucks? The damn plates are for cars that don't get driven very much. These plates are for cars that see south of a thousand miles a year, and for trucks that don't haul anything .I say enforce the law a little better, and put a cap on the age like said earlier 1975. It isn't my fault they spend money like **** around here!!!! EDIT... I made the call also!!!
I'll give the call: I agree that a car that doesn't get out much should get a break on the tabs. I'm not opposed to the $30.00; I'm oppossed to the use of the money that is collected: it goes into the General Fund and is appropriated for non-WSDOT use. I can't stand it!
Year of manufacture plates? ever heard of them? I am running a original 1967 Washington plate on my 67 GTO. It is an A designation, which means it was originally registered in King county.....where I live. It was a one time fee and I am restricted to the "parade duty" rules the same as regular plates that say collector vehicle. Personally, I DRIVE all my cars as daily drivers and rotate through them on a as need basis. The newest car I own is 4 years older than I am. I want to drive on year of manufacture plates with out any restrictions on all my cars. Before. I had two cars with regular registration, they might now get YOM plates. I would have gladly paid to do this years ago. They just made it easy for me.
You don't think they will go after YOM plates? If you do drive all your vehicles on a regular basis you should have to pay a fee.
After looking at the plate type list, there 7 types with no renewal fee, only collector and horseless carriage plates are slated for annual fees. No fee changes on square dancer, military affiliate radio system, ride share or amateur radio license, plates. I'm just wondering why? ............Jack
It won't hurt the guy with one car all that bad, but the guys with several cars running YOM or collector plates will end up having to pay up or park. and face it we all know of at least one guy running some sort of vintage plate that doesn't put 200 miles a year on his car ever.
I guess i am not as ******** as some other people. I ENJOY keeping my toys out of the rain. I have 4 cars, 2 of which I would consider a driver. (A car that sits outside, and is driven in any weather condition). One (1990 chev dually) is coming up on collector plate status. I am not going to register this vehicle under collector vehicle status because it is against the rules. However I have a 67 chevelle that is not driven regularly (probably less than 1,000 a year) it is a racecar with license plate. Why should I have to pay a fee for this car? I have had this collector plate for 15 years now,and just think it ****s that someone with a Buick Regal who drives 12,000 miles a year ruins **** for the rest of us.
They are going to go after YOM plates too for yearly fees. They are essentially the same as collector vehicle plates. Just that I supplied mine. instead of state issued. what I am excited about is them removing this. 11 (4) ((A collector vehicle registered under this section may only be 12 used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, 13 and occasional pleasure driving. If they are removing this section from the original bill. They are making it legal to drive on YOM plates whenever I want. I could be completely wrong. this is just how I read it. I agree it ****s for you guys that don't drive your cars as much as I do.
What about me with my grandfathers 1979 Ford F250 Supercab. It's older than I am. My newest vehicle. Grandfather bought it new. Probably one of the nicest late 70's un-restored pickups around. I have the original plates hanging on the wall. I can't run them as YOM because I need to use it as a real truck. I would gladly pay money to be able to use it as a regular plate. But I can't under current laws. That is the only good thing about this bill. I agree that you should get a break on your low miles driven yearly cl***ic, But that would probably require yearly odometer disclosure.....and another fee.
I'm with Hitchhiker on this one....I would love to use YOM plates on my '66 I'm building for/with my son, I think the modern plates (especially the new ones with the flat numbers) look really dumb on an old car. But I also don't want to give my kid a bad example (and the potential h***les with the cops) by telling him to run the plates illegally on his truck that he will use as his only ride. I always thought the State could turn a legitimate, fair buck or two by offering a regular registration on old plates, theres a lot of us that would pay the regular fees to keep an old style plate on our old cars. Or even go one further like Oregon did for a while and re-issue new old style plates for a higher fee....Oregon did their old yellow ones for a while, brand new for use on any car you want, just cost a little extra. As for the collector plates, lets be honest here...How many collector plates are actually on vehicles that are only used for shows/parades/etc....An awful lot of them are just being used to dodge registration fees. So all this bill does for most of those guys is make them pay the same fees everybody else does for using the roads. Does it ****? Yeah, but no more than any other car you own. Now for the guys that use the collector plates legitimately, this is ****y. They should come up with a way to verify that the vehicle is only driven a minimal amount.... But overall, if you actually drive your car and don't just look at it and polish it on the weekends, this is gonna be a net positive. That '66 is gonna look good in the old green and white plates.....
im not for them changing the rules on us, plus it is a simple 30 bucks now that ballons into much more down the road. lets just kill the bill please
I agree partly in the aspect that the 25 year mark is ridiculus and that has opened the door for alot of abuse of the system. I also feel that bicyclists are another area of revenue that is completely ignored because of the "green" mentality and is an avenue for revenue that will never be touched because of the big city green push. Cars , Trucks ,Boats , campers snowmobiles , motorcycles , quads , dogs , etc. require a license - but a bicycle riding on public streets and are constantly getting bike lanes added and maintained without paying for a license on them. They don't follow the traffic laws and most will argue that they pay for the roads when they license and their 1 car. I have several as do most here, and have to license and INSURE all of them.......but I see you live in Seattle and work in government from your profile , so I probably won't get any sympathy from you....
Well, if we're gonna roll back the fees, let's roll them ALL the way back to before I-man got the $30 tabs on the ballot. Does anyone else remember paying hundreds of dollars for their registration fees? One year mine came to over $500 for one car! The problem with this state is that they can't seem to ever find the middle ground. There should be a cutoff date for YOM, there really aren't that many vehicles that are pre '64 out on the street, after that if it's gonna be on the street it should be subject to annual registration. I don't have a problem paying the $30, but those idiots in Oly won't stop there.
30$ aint bad. Maybe like everyone else said enforce the year cut off date and abuse of tweekers buying collecter plates for thier run down honda. Still unneccisary thought. It would be a gateway bill to allow other legislation to be p***ed to collect money off these cars.
Two drivers in the household. Three late models cars with regular plates. Two more with YOMs, and another with collector plates. How much can I actually drive any of them? Probably no more use on the States hiways than if we had just the two late models. So I don't buy the unfair argument at all, but fair or not it is a sign of the times. Hopefully they at least drop the restrictions on these plates if you have to pay normal $ for them.
l don't mind paying for the cars l drive everyday, my rods are only driven on nice days, so why should l pay for 365 when l can only drive them sometimes. 4 of my rods are fenderless and in washington the fairwheather rcw states no inclement driving of the fenderless vehicles. my income is low but l trade for most of the things l need or sell parts l don't need. l have about 40 years of parts from being a pack rat. of the cars l have most was running before l got hurt and can't work. try living on $800.00 a month and then the state wants $180.00 just to drive on there roads and the tabs fee WON"T HELP IMPROVE the roads at all! and as stated, l have learned this state don't stop at a little poke, they shove the whole thing up your'e A** and the lube is loaded with sand and ground gl***. Later
I think the dear old gov can ride the bus or get shuttled around in Prious! That would save the tax payers in WA some money!
