i run a certified shop in ohio i dont know about other states but legally we have to accept used oil, since we change oil and sell it here. it maybe a E.P.A. thing or gov. thing, i am pretty lucky though i installed a oil burner furnace last year so i welcome any used oil, just gotta make sure its relatively free of stuff like water or coolant.

and a happy thanksgiving to you. george

I used to pour mine at the base of telephone poles eons ago, was supposed to be good for preserving them, not PC these days.

Any place that does oil changes has always done it for me. Jiffy Lube lets me drop them off in old gallon jugs or will drain my 6-gallon jug if I want to wait around.

Here in Anderson we have recycling centers around the area,,they include large stationary tanks to pour used motor oil in and I'm sure it is sold to help fund the centers,,they also take s**** metal, wood, card board and trash.

I have not always done the right thing,,as a teenager I did like my granddad did,,,pore the used motor oil in the ditch to kill the gr***,, HRP

At my local county landfill center, I use old oil, newspaper, plastic bottles to offset the cost of dumping...haven't had to pay a dump fee in the last 12 yrs. I'm sure they sell the old oil all off ,but it's better than dumping it on the ground...esp. since I have a well for my water supply

In our town, we have one Saturday a month that the town garage (about 2-miles from my shop) accepts used motor oil. I save my used oil in 2-gal jugs and take it there when I have a couple of 'em filled.

NYS law says any place that changes oil has to accept used oil for recycle.

I'm the family mechanic. I take waste oil to the local Autozone. The old oil filters go to the city hazardous waste center. It's open 3 days a week. They take just about any household hazardous waste. They would take the used oil also. Autozone is more convenient. Pretty cool deal.

I heard that our local steam train is going to start taking used motor oils. I need to check into it.

My city has a oil recycling center (it is next to the city garage) and I fill a 5 gal. jug and take it their when it is full. They take filters as well. I found it by calling the city.

We have a county-run hazardous waste drop off site. It's great -- motor oil, old gas, cans of paint, solvents, etc. I get so mad when I see that stuff poured out in a vacant lot!

The shop has a waste oil heater....we burn transmission fluid, engine oil, and gasoline in it....it's all mixed up in a 300 gallon tank, so the gasoline looses it's BANG.

my shop at home is wood fire heated

I am just finishing up a filtration system to burn it in my fuel oil furnace that i heat my garage with. I have been experimenting with it, and if you filter it enough, it burns in the furnace just fine!! Hopefully I can keep the heat on all winter by burning waste oil!!!

Because I'm a retail slave, heres the breakdown. Engine oil, transmission fluid and hydraulic oil: Most chain parts stores have a recycle tank. and they take up to 5 gals. a day per person. Small amounts of Glycol based coolants are safe to flush or pour in the sink(NO GUTTERS!) and you'll have to get ahold of your local landfill operator(swaco here) for directions on how to dispose of fuels and chemicals like mineral spirits and paint thinners. Make sure there is nothing extra in your oils like gas or silicone based brake fluid. it can wreak havok on recycling oils. hope this helps

A buddy has a muffler shop. He lets me get rid of the oil there.

Another is an auto instructor at a local vo-tech. Same.

The City has a hazardous waste facility that accepts paints and oils, too. It's free if you are a City resident.

The dealership I used to work at takes any old oil. We had/they have a 5000 gallon tank
underground for it. We sold the oil to a local company that did road projects.

I believe that even WalMarts are taking waste oil now. We used to dump oil in the alley, which was gravel. It kept the dust down. They even used to take tanker trucks full of oil and spray down the gravel roads on the outskirst of town to keep the dust down. NOT anymore.

The dealership where I work has a waste oil furnace as a supplement to the main heating system. Otherwise, I could alway send it to 6inarow and let him use it in his car.
