Holey Flexing Wishbones! I still would feel better if the internal circumference of the oblong cuts was "boxed". There would still be an opening but the "hollow" edges would be welded. Hard to explain.

The issue is not with the front axle as it is forged and over engineered anyway.

The bones are just hollow thin walled tube, not too thin being almost 3/16", designed for the engineered purpose. Removing small amounts and reinforcing the area around the removed portions is necessary. Removing large amounts as the oblong slots in this case, then the reinforcing boxing plate material must be much thicker to take the extra strain, not to mention the care needed in building and reconstructing/adapting these to the tubes.

All of this I am sure was previously thought out.

    Just throwing in my BAAAAAAAAA..

I am curious about your cross member?. Does the spring have any movement in a relaxed state? When you jack the car up does the spring bottom out on the cross member? If so I would think this will create a world of shit when driving it.

I had a good look at your axle and bones, from an engineering perspective they are OK as is.
The slots in the axle do not affect bending [beaming] strength much, if the axle wants to bend, the bottom edge wants to stretch and the top edge wants to compress [ or kink ]
If you slotted between where the bones mount and the kingpins ,this would be dangerous [never do that] because the axle tries to parallelogram itself under load.

The bones are also OK because they have an oval section and you only slotted the sides [ the top and bottom still have their structural integrity for tension and compression ]
You will have some bending loads under "brake torque" which will try to compress the bottom edge.
Do not mount the spring shackles on the bones suicide style [especially behind the first slot ] the first major bump and the bones will try and bend like a parallelogram.

I hope this helps clear up a few doubts. [ I will be comfortable doing the same mods on an anglia front end for a vintage styled racer ]

I think you've got a mismatch of styles going on. Wire wheels and wide whites don't seem to match the broken low stance and dual quad chevy in my book.

still scratching...i know the guys at pinkees are pros, but does it limit suspension travel?..and what do you gain by having the spring over the crossmember?..

yeah, engineering basics arches, and circles are good for structure but slots definatly are not. You might get by with the wishbones being slotted as long as they have been filled, but the axle is definetly toast.

You certainly have "wasted" your parts. After seeing your axle/wishbone/crossmember I gotta wonder if you are hittin on all cylinders?

That cross member and spring have to hit when the car comes back up on it's travel. I just looked at the Pinkees web site and I and baffled as to how this thing can function correctly with out causing damage to the spring.

Dash and 15s maybe, Kelseys and a stock dash yes, dash and Kelseys dont really go together IMHO.

Just saw the mock up, that works for me :)...

the crossmembers look a bit different..pinkees and vonstripers spring is sitting directly on top of the crossmember...the salt flats ss. project has some room for the spring to travel...i mean its gotta work right if pinkees sells it?..

Re the slots cut in the axle compared to
round holes - it's not merely a matter of
"taste" and personal preference. it's a
matter of safety and common sense and
of basic engineering, metaliurgy and the
laws of physics!! Compared to just drilling
some round lightening holes in the axle.
those slots have severely weakened it and
it will almost certainly break. It's your car
and your neck and your "taste", but I hope
you don't take out anybody else who's
unfortunate enough to be on the same road
as you *when* your "cool" front axle lets go
    on you.

huh... while you guys are busy arguing about all his parts, he's getting closer and closer to driving.
