Last I heard from my painter is that single-stage will stay the same but with a different catalyst. Only the two-stage will have to go to waterbased because of the high VOC of available clearcoats. This is in Cali, though. Not many trees still in need of hugging here, ya know.

whoa u guys are highly miss iformed on cali paint laws. and listen to alot of rumors and just straight paint store bs.

the voc of basecoat including tri stages is being reduced to 3.5 vlc. most of the painters know that solvent basecoats are well over 5.

this law also says the base must be 3.5 before exempt solvents are thrown in. (meaning u take a paint thats 5.7 voc and add 0 voc reducer and divide by two and u get less then 3.5voc)companies like sem have a compliant reducer. but this as it sits right now is a grey area. xotic has a 3.5 system that the urethane base mixes 4 to 1. the whole deal smells like omni clear kind of. lol. ive used this both in airbrushing and graphics, only on small stuff to test, so spraying large areas might be a bitch.

for custom its not gunna be a big deal. hok has compliant shit, that most wont use anyway. sem has their compliant reducer, xotic has theres. nason is supposed to have a 3.5 urethane base.

thing is, waterborne is actually easy to spray. its really not bad untill u get into tri stage blends which can be tricky. but most of that will be crash painter stuff that not many on here do.

dont be scared of this shit, its not a big deal.

guys like altered pilot get great results out of auto air that i have seen in person. ive sprayed auto air enuff to like it, but hes sprayed a shit load of bikes with it.

auto air is purely waterbased. waterborne has solvent, big difference.

and to the guy who said europe isnt ahead of us... well in paint, they blow us out the f'in water, pun intended. if u buy paint u will see alot of american products especially clear, that claim euro style. the most expensive highend paint companies....... guess what... euro! akzo nobel, glasurit, speis hecker.

as it stands with guns, 1.2 in cold temps and 1.4s to even 1.5s in the summer with waterborne. another gun to buy.. big deal, painters love new guns.

I went to a demonstration at a friends paint shop, looked easy, was easy to spray and spread out really nice. Just needed to be cleared cause if left as a basecoat water will wash it off. Was kinda crazy... but cool..

If your a professional or a good craftsmen either type of paint doesnt really matter. BASF Glaserit has had a waterborne line for over 15 years I believe. The Onyx System by BASF is pretty good. The cool thing is the pearls with the Diamont system can be added right into the toners for onyx base which is cool. But here is the problem if you are using old school shit like Murano pearl or HOK pearl paste. It wont mix for obvious reasons. Not sure how the candy will flow out either, but Carizzma has there stuff in waterborne too. I have a dry pearl that pops awsome and is based off the same tech that Murano pearl was and looks just like it. Just working on packaging and stuff right now.

My boss and I are going to be painting a TA/FC soon in all waterborne and with the New pearl.

Dont be scared of the stuff, master that shit or you will be the one in the alley buying some outlaw'd paint.

    Just my 2cents
