Ive done a search, but cannot find the answer I'm looking for. Why is it when using a Zip water pump riser on a sbc that you have to use a bypass hose between #6-8 cylinders and the pump? Somethings i see say that you need to, and others say it's not necessary. I'd love to not have to run a bypass, as my car nas no hood and I don't want to see a hose running to the cylinder head.
Sounds like a question for Hot Rod magazine they are really into that high tech stuff. Ok so the question becomes are you considering drilling a hole between the 6 and 8 cylinder? maybe someone ment that you should poke a hole through the manifold flange onto the water jacket at the rear of the intake? The ones that are normally blocked off? Your heads will cool more evenly if you do that with any cooling setup.
I am going to use my third zips riser on my current build...........The last one I bought was used but I don't remember reading where it was required, I had no problems with the other two.
See the small hole ... below the water pump mounting holes on the Engine ID/ Number/Vin code pad. That small holes allows water to cirulate ... in the block to the water pump all the time. The ZIP pump does NOT have that hole in it. The hose from in between #6 and #8 duplicates that passage way. I always have had the hose on my vehicles ... but some folks have gotten away without it ( so they say ). I always run a small plate on the rear on the water pump impeller ... And I always upgrade the vent valve to one from Chevrolet Part number #10070107 IF ... your cooling system is in tip top shape and adequate to cool the engine ... you might get away witout the hose. Some rodders use a braided hose with AN fittings to improve the looks of the hose. Randy .
The water pump bypass allows some circulation when the thermostat is closed. The Snow White riser calls for a vented thermostat plate to accomplish that - three holes about 3/16". Drill your thermostat or by a Shaw. Should work with the Zip??
Randy, Thanks for the great info and part numbers. Now I'm wondering about drilling some holes in the thermostat base plate! If that works, it would make my day!
Randy, I have never read anything on this (but sometimes I don't read directions)..........now I'm second guessing myself.
