The last storm that just hit us here on the Pacific overwhelmed the cowl drains on my 1960 Falcon. Yes, they are clean and clear.

I know that they sell handy Lexan covers for Mustangs to prevent this.

Does anyone here have a '65-'66 Mustang who could measure the vent area.

I want to see if one of these will fit my Falcon.

I have plans to delete this vent and relocate the intake, when the car goes to body and paint. That will not be for some time.

It is either that, or I am going to have to install a couple of bilge pumps.

You said the cowl is clear but are you sure the drain hole is clear at the end of the cowl. It's quite a large hole that drains out inside the fender. I have had large tropical downpours that have not filled my cowl or overflowed the vents so it might be worth investigating.

It was raining at a rate of 2" per hour, for an extended period.

Get a magnetic sign and trim it to fit.
If the water is entering the passenger compartment, I'd suspect the "hats" on top of the vent tubes inside the cowl are rotted out.

The hats are intact. It's a California car, and I re-sealed the vents recently.

If the water rose above the hats high enough to overflow into the car, I'd agree with other posters that your drains aren't flowing enough. The drains should be able to handle a garden hose at full blast without filling the cowl.

with that kind of rain i'm not surprised even intact cowl drains are overwhelmed. i rebuilt the inner cowl on my long-gone '62 falcon a few years ago and extended the hat as far upward as the cowl top would allow. the other issue with those lexan vent covers is that the slots go around the wiper posts and don't seal well. clear duct tape is the best quick method to deal with keeping water out.

  8. 24 1/2 inches from side to side. Pic is from my 65 Mustang.
