Wavecrest 38th woodie meet Sat. Sept. 23, 2017 Moonlight Beach, Encinitas CA ...a few images to share from the annual Wavecrest woodie meet held for several decades at Moonlight Beach in the city of Encinitas, CA in San Diego county. It's akin to what the Indy 500 is to open wheel racing, or the NSRA Nationals in Louisville, KY it to street rodding for woodie enthusiasts. Started out years back in Oceanside, CA (just about 15 min.'s north of Encinitas) near Camp Pendleton U.S. Marine base, but ultimately moved to Moonlight Beach nearly 3 decades ago. Been attending as a spectator for over 20 yrs., it encomp***es all makes and models of wood bodied wagons, sedans and convertibles ranging from concourse restorations to ragedy "beaters" to the unusual and undefinable. Usually sees about 150-plus vehicles and this year was no exception. Hosted by the San Diego Woodie Club, the event has grown to attract folks from out of state (and from overseas) and become a 3 day event (almost) with caravan cruises along Pacific Coast Highway 1 and casual woodie club member & woodie owner social events both Friday afternoon & Sunday evening. Lots of surf culture swag, collections and accessories on display along with "great outdoors" campout themed stuff as well. Usually falls on the first weekend of the Fall season (appx. the 3rd weekend of Sept.) on Sat. from 9am-3pm. Usually best to arrive as a spectator no later than 7am in order to find parking close to the beach parking lot in the residential streets it's surrounded by. There's other great woodie shows along CA's West coast (Santa Cruz, "Woodies on the Wharf" the weekend after Father's Day in June and Santa Barbara woodie Club show @ Santa Barbara Junior College campus in early August) but this is the "biggie". Check it out if the opportunity arises for something different!
missed it again ! some day I'll make it... National Woodie Club is having it's first real National Woodie Meet back in Detroit... should be a great
We drove our '46 Ford "Woodie" cross country in 2010 to attend. Hands down, the best car show I have ever been to and I have been playing with antique cars since 1962. Four days of Woodie fun, surfing contest, welcome get together and cruise and the nicest and most scenic venue for a car show. Can't wait to do it again.
Encinitas is my favorite So Cal town. Must be a great place for a show, going to have to travel south for this one.
