Don't get me wrong Gary, no doubt there are still guys doing very nice work on here, that's not what I was driving at exactly. What I was saying is the majority of guys on here really only want to hear about old methods and techniques if they are rough and unsophisticated, there is a LOT less enthusiasm for old techniques that require effort and craftsmanship.
Another guy just started a thread on here the other day, and the subject he was driving at was that he wanted to see the techniques that were used back in the day by guys doing stuff to a very high standard in the fifties with less sophisticated equipment than we take for granted today.
Even on that thread, everyone immediately started celebrating the rough hack jobs. Most guys aren't interested in talking about how guys were gas welding beautiful hand formed aluminum race car noses, or building torsion bar sprung, round tube ch***is, they want to talk about fibregl*** over chicken wire and bubble gum welds. Instead of striving to copy Whitey Clayton, they Seem to aspire to Homer Simpson...

PS: 50??!! YA *****! Hell, I'm still in khakis and sandals at 50! I was wearing less than that walking my kid home from school at 27f last week! Californians...:D a very Merry Christmas to you and yours too Gary.

Same way in Florida, George. A good friend is a Florida snowbird, and he and his wife work at Disney down there. They break out sweatshirts at 70F, and coats at 60F. Disney starts issueing thier employees handwarmers at 70F.
    Whattabunch of wusses.

I shouldn't talk. Before I got married, I was in Ottawa in February to meet up with this girl I knew from Shangai, she was in Ottawa on business and stayed over for a long weekend. It was -22/25f in bright sunshine, not counting the windchill. With the windchill it was -30! We had scarfs up over our noses and toques pulled down over our ears, the locals were walking around in sweaters and leather jackets, and looking at us like we were freaks.:D Really beautiful city in winter though, they had ice sculptures everywhere, and the c**** is frozen, and they have these little coffee stands and food vendors set up on the c**** with these little booths with skids on the bottom. We had a gas when we weren't freezing to death!

Bought a 32 Ford chopped 4dr. in '07. It was a real mixed bag car , some very nice chop and lead work and some real crude work and welding on the ch***is and some pretty nice work by some totally non hot rod people along the way. One of the really impressive work was the wiring done on the BIG solid oak dashboard and the related ignition work.It was really done well. Cloth wiring, well thought out and laid out and VERY nice waxed wrapping. It was a very professional 50's journeyman work. Just about all of that style of work is a lost art. Shame.

This isn't facebook. Come to think of it I don't remember ever seeing a build thread from you on here. Let's see some pictures of your 100% period perfect cars and all their great period details.

I know waxed string as lacing tape. It really is an art form if done right and continuous lacing is a no-no by most military standards. There are two basic mil-specs that cover it, A-A-52081 and MIL-T-43435. Either one, the lacing tape is incredibly strong.

I had a harness vendor call one of our buyers a few years back, they told her that their harness knots were coming loose using the tape we specified. So I had to answer that one. It turns out that they were doing the square-knot tie incorrectly.

The Hamb (or any other Internet forum) is like a virtual cruise night. You meet people you like, and would invite back to your place to see your cars and what you are working on, you meet people that you are neutral to, and you meet other people that you wouldn't piss on if they were on fire. If I have no respect for someone, then their opinion is none of my concern, and I have no reason to let them rent space in my head. That's what the ignore ****on is there for.
A build thread is like holding a garage night, if you post it on the open forum, you are inviting everyone and anyone in to see what's in your shop and what you are doing. There's ways to set it up so you can control who you invite into your garage, and who you don't.

I bumped this because you don't see much of this kind of thing on here anymore, Harv has been doing this, I thought it was a good idea. Instead, al that has happened is a good thread has been stunk up big time. Won't do that again, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Invisible, my regular computer came back today, but I can't get it to connect to my wifi. Once I do, I will get that scanned and pm'ed to you.

This thread is about looming wires, if you don't have anything constructive to add then don't post. You want to piss, moan and whine go to YB and join in. We, speaking for all Hamb'rs, don't want it here.

Wow what harshness on the HAMB! I am sorry this thread turned into that. I like the old school way of doing things. Details are what make an OK car a really nice car. I put cloth wiring in my coupe to make the details better. If one person out of 500 that looks at my car notices it is all worth it. I would much rather look under the dash of a car and see friction tape and wax string or what ever you call it than black plastic tape and zip ties.

By the way I used a company called Narigansett reproductions for my wiring supplies. Their prices were better than any body else I found.

You know guys their are some "grumpy old men" on the HAMB, well everywhere. I just went through a bout with another one on another thread WITH NO HARD FEELINGS! One of my first posts on the HAMB was defending a friend when another HAMBer called him "gay". It got so heated I was almost banished. That friend PMed me and said cool it Gary that's what happens on the HAMB. So guys just let it go it's going to happen.

I don't know how many thousands of feet of cable I laced with waxed cord when I was installing central offices back in the 70's. I do know that I had one hell of a callous on the side of my right hand. It was time consuming work, but we had some pride in how it looked when it was done.
