I have to take a moment to acknowledge the p***ing of Phoenix area rodder and shop owner Carl Dubow early this morning. His name might not be readily recognizable to most here on the board, but to those of us in the hot rod community here in Phoenix he was definitely part of the group. His business THE ROD FACTORY was a large part of the scene here for the last 35 years or so. Chances are if you have built a car in this area, you have something from his shop on it somewhere. A lot of our younger (youngish?) talent got their start working in the fabrication end of his business. He was definitely one of those people that you got along with or didn't, but he will be missed. I,for one, was proud to call him friend.
Copy-cat Carl as Del Austin would call him. Some in the funny car world of the sixties and seventies would recognize him as the crew chief for Roger Lindamood and his "Color Me Gone" funny car. I worked for the man on and off for over 8 years and learned a ton of good and bad. I got the news this morning in Deming NM on my way back from the Lone Star Round Up. Sad day but we knew it was only a matter of time.
I never did get along with him, but in his odd (and stubborn) way he taught me a lot. Sad news for sure. God speed Carl.
There will be a gathering in memory of Carl on Wednesday (4/21) afternoon at Premier Frame and Body at the address below: Premier Frame and Body 3209 W. Clarendon, Phoenix, AZ 602-248-0812 Drive your hot rods if you can. I'm not sure of the start time for this, I'll try to nail it down and post it later. Update: start time is 4:00pm
I had not heard about his p***ing. Years ago (1995-1996? maybe?) he took me in the shop and went into great detail the proper way to use a tubing bender so I could run stainless lines on my Roadster and use AN fittings so it looked professional. I wonder how many years his full page ads ran in Street Rodder magazine?
He was the first man to not hire me (when I was 16 looking for my first job) but I'm still rockin' the Lokar shifter I bought from him in '96. RIP Carl.
