Very true about there being a huge hole that can't be filled. Setting aside the huge talent he was on the track, he was just a excellent person in general. He wasn't full of himself.l I've heard stories about him going out of his way to let some of the people doing menial jobs around race tracks know that he appreciated them.

In fact, I've only ever heard one person say a word against him, and that was a diva with moderate talent and monster ego who is leaving Indycar for NASCAR (and improving BOTH series in the process)

He was going to get Danica's ride full-time next year. He would have proved what the problem with that car was by mid-season.

  2. Lets we forget Dan Wheldon's outstanding record at the Indy 500...one of , if not the best driver at Indy in the 2000s.

    • Eight Starts
    • Rookie of the Year Award
    • Two Wins
    • Two 2nd place finishes
    • One 3rd place finish
    • One 4th place finish

Amazing...he owned that place..and with being the primary test driver for the new car, he would have undoubtedly been the clear 2012 favorite. Such a sad, sad loss and a shame.

There are a number of people on this board, myself included, that knew Dan. Regardless of the fact that we willingly go about our business at the race tracks and are fully aware of the dangers and consequences these things are never easy when they happen. The feeling of family is always present at time like these.

All of us that strap into a race car on a regular basis certainly feel the pain when someone passes doing what we love to do !

R.I.P. Dan, You were a good one.

  6. Absolutely, Dan Wheldon was my favorite current Indycar driver. I was watching live on TV when it happened. It really didn't seem real at that moment. One of those moments where it just sucked the air out of the room, because you knew it was bad; that someone wasn't going to walk away to wave at the crowd afterwards. Truly a shame.

RIP, Dan Wheldon. Your talent is a rare one, and you will be missed.
