We need a HAMBer help list, Like the NSRA fellow pages

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fat ASS Whitewalls, Jun 27, 2004.

1. I was thinking about this the other day, then I read the post about Atch's troubles. We should put together a list of HAMBers that can, and will, help out a fellow HAMBer when they're traveling. We could do up a list with name, address, and phone numbers, or just name, and phone number, that can be printed out. What do you think? Dean

I dont know if it`s a good idea to put it here for a whole world of pricks to see, but I think it`s a good idea.

Ryan has enough to do so someone would have to volunteer to take these names and numbers and put them on a list, then the list could be e-mailed to any legit HAMBer to be printed out at thier home.

I`m sorry this person cant be me, I have so much on my plate right now I`m about to puke!!

I have a ton going on too (who doesn't?), but I feel the need to contribute. I'll do it.

What all do we need on there? Names/aliases, addresses/locales, phone numbers. Anything else?

Or for security, maybe Jimv [IMG] or someone could be the dispatcher,

the broken down HAMBer would call HAMB Central

and the dispatcher would call the nearest HAMBer on the Willing to Help List.

It is a good idea and a bad idea.

Good: In case you break down in the middle of nowhere.

Bad: A HAMBer mentions that he is going to a car show for the weekend, and a thief knows this from the internet and goes over the the farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and breaks into the barn and rips the guy off knowing that he will not be back til' Sunday night. I think that happened to one of the Texas guys a couple of years ago.

You could make your own HAMB pages on a 3X5 card. I have a ton of HAMBer's phone numbers in my cell phone & they are broke down by region and area on a couple of 3X5 card (the cards are small and easy to carry). Also, you can keep an eye on the board and see who post's alot (it is pretty easy to see who is alway's online) and what time the are on & write down there name and timeframe they are online and if you ever breakdown in the middle of somewhere call up that person and ask them to put out an "Alert" on the board of "HAMBer Down".

Just a few thoughts that I came up with after driving to the Salt in 01'.

I'll do it. It's a great idea Dean. I have my own HAMB help list that has over 100 HAMB folks names and numbers in case of me having trouble along the road. I won't include anyone on a list though unless they have sent the info for that purpose.

So here goes, if you send me your real name, screen name, address, phones (home, cell work), email address, and the closest intersecting highways. (example: I-275 and I96) I'll put you on a HAMB help list. If your names on the help list you get in return the completed list emailed back to you. I'll use the NSRA Fellow Pages as a guide and put our list together in alphabetical order by state.

Cut and paste the following into a PM or email to me and we'll get the ball rolling. I'll continue to gather info for the next month or so and send the mass email with the finished product the begining of AUG so folks can print it out and will have it to take on the road with them to the HAMB Drags.

REAL NAME
SCREEN NAME
ADRRESS
MAJOR INTERSECTION
CELL
HOME
WORK
EMAIL ADRRESS

That's a great idea Denise. If you're on the list, you get the list. I'm a pretty private guy with my info and even I think that is probably the best effort at security we're gonna get.

And I agree that we certainly don't need to throw another responsibility at Ryan as he does plenty for all of us.

I'll PM ya.

OVER 30 HAMB folks have sent me their info already and it's only the first day! [IMG] [IMG] If we get a few HAMB folks in each state, more in the bigger states of course, we'd have the whole country covered real well in case of a fellow HAMBer having trouble.

Keep the info coming fellows, this list is going to very helpful to all involved.

23. Roger that Denise.........my info is on it's way........thanks for banging this list together for all us travel'n HAMBer's!! [IMG]

Great idea !
I am all for it and Denise I too have sent my info.
Hopefully all Hambers will get on this list and when being called... take it seriously to help.
Now we need a good Hamb name for this list...........??

wow!

27. I sent my info....If you send your info make sure you want to help people. Twice I tried the NSRA fellow pages and both times got no help. One time was in Colorodo in the middle of nowhere my last bit of change. The guy said he put his name on the list just so he could talk to people but he couldn't help us. Couldn't even help us find a rollback. Had to wait for a cop to show up to get help. What an idiot!!

I've had the opposite experience as Clark. I've used the NSRA Fellow Pages many times and the guys have been right out to help or have given me directions to their place.

Once on my way to BTTF's in St Paul, MN from Detroit my alternator was going out. I called the first guy in the area, he said he'd be right out to get me, I said I could get Big Olds to him as he was still running. The guy was about 1 mile from where I was, I pulled up in his driveway, he determined I needed a new alternator, went in his garage pulled one off the shelf and in about 10 minutes replaced mine. I tried to pay him for it, wouldn't take any money, just said send his back to him once I got mine rebuilt. Once I got back home and had mine rebuilt, I swapped his out, made a batch of cookies and personally delivered both alternator and cookies to him and made a new friend to boot. I stopped at his place a couple of times after that just to say hi as I was passing close to his town. The last time I stoppped there him and his wife had sold the house and moved. Chatting with the new owner for a bit, he got a kick out of the story of how I met the folks that sold him the house.

On another note, it's not real important that you are a hot rod guru machanic or something. Sometimes all the person needs is a ride to the nearest parts store or something else as simple. On the way to the Hunnert Car Pileup last year we were in bumper to bumper traffic in a rual area for quite a while on I94 in the roadster. The plugs fouled out and basicly Roadstar just needed a ride to a parts store. I called a guy from the Fellow Pages and he said he'd be right out. In the meantime someone else stoppped and offered a ride so Rudy went with him. The guy from the fellow pages got there and hung out with me till not only Rudy got back, but waited while he got the Roadster running again THEN led us through the back roads, around the backup, then back to the highway. Very cool of him.

Point is, even if you think you might not be much help, you are the one that knows your area, has friends in the area that might be helpful, or sometimes just an extra set of hands to hold a flashlite is a big help. There is no reason everyone who reads this thread shouldn't be in HAMB helper pages.
