I'm not trying to argue with you or tell you how to live. I am just saying that if a show looks like a "kulture"-pimp deal, I will keep on driving by as will plenty of others on this exact thread. It is why some places in this town has joke cars parking in the lot while everyone plays dressup.

I am giving some advice on how to get interested parties to show up, don't take it personally even if it is your plan to do that, just realize that some aren't into it as a lifestyle or fashion accessory.

    AAAHHHAHAHHAHA! thats a good one.

I think the point desertdroog is making is when someone says "traditional show" and then tries to make it everything that is modern and kitsch just to get numbers up, then it becomes an absurdity and will be viewed with harsh criticism by those who want a "traditional show".

If all the so called "kulture people" show up that just means we did a bang-up job of getting the word out. When they do show up its our chance to help these kids "see the light"...
Kerry and I had a chance to talk in person for a few minutes the other night and we are both in favor of having "controlled access" to the show. His original intention was to have traditional cars and no "joke" cars.
This thread is not just a public forum for ideas for this show but an open invitation for everyone who is interested to have a hand in making it a success. No reason to drive on by the show if you can help us out at the gate and send the ****-boxes rolling on down the road.
This is going to take alot of planning and hard work, but when you look at who is already willing to chip in on this project, its hard not envision sitting back and sipping a cold one thanking eveyone for a job well done.

I am NOT talking about letting a bunch of cars that are **** in. I want to keep it along the VIVA, Hunnert Lines as far as cars. But if people show up, scenesters or not, I am happy. The more people the more of a success the show was. But I want to control the cars that are in. That is where everyone comes in.....

I want a cool show. Period. Hopefullly with all those interested, we will have a cool one.

I was contacted by someone who wants my number to start "Billetproof" show here in AZ so maybe we are on to something.

So if you drive up and see a bunch of guys with grease in their hair, tattoos, etc, you'll drive right by ? Too bad....

I have noticed that most of the people who complain about the scenesters, look exactally like the people they call scenesters.

How about Saturday the 8th somewhere ? Maybe set it up for lunch time if that works? I know the Sinners were busy on the 1st so maybe this will work.

The guys from Billetproof contacted me as well, so we are already getting some great input. All we need now is a plan and the man-power to put it into action.

I do believe that the point has been made that this will be a TRADITIONAL car show and I think it should be stated that we expect to and will turn away cars that don't measure up.

edit: 5/8 afternoon works for me BTW...

So do you know what I look like? Or is this a non sequitur?

I actually know what it is like to control which cars get in and don't get in to a show.

Ask Hot Rod Ron, I ran the gate at his last Greaseball. Here you can see what kind of a turn out we had:

    http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e400/desertdroog/Greaseball4_09_16_06/

Regarding seeing a show that looks like one I wouldn't be interested in, well thankfully the people who put on the show can do a bang up job of advertising it as something other than a traditional show. So you know, they weed my kind out before we even make a drive out there.

But hey, you just said were contacted regarding doing a Billet-Proof out here. Go for it, I wish you luck, that is a big name to have behind you so you are on your way which is pretty fantastic.

Not sure why you took offense over my opinion on a traditional board like the Jalopy Journal. I mean, you are here, you know what this site and the members are about.

Why are we even going through these motions?

Look, if you read some of my old posts on other shows, one of my pet peeves is people go to these shows that took a lot of effort for someone to put on, and then they complain about a few cars that are let in or complain about some of the people that are there. To me that is just snobbish and thats why I got out of the muscle car thing. I had a BEAUTIFUL 67 Lemans and got sick of people coming up and looking at it and then snubbing it because it was not numbers matching so it must be a piece of ****......

Like Nick has said, we want to regulate what cars get in. I don't mind a low buck unfinished car that some may call a R** R** even, just as long as it is not a hokey POS that is half Tractor, Part Car and Part a bunch of left over **** just to make it obnoxious and have people comment on it. If it a sincere attempt at a decent car then it is cool with me. Come and enjoy the show.....

So, I hope you come to the show and have a good time, I hope that if this goes down, every has a good time and hopefully it could turn into something. Why not show up on the 8th if that is when we do our meeting and lets all throw some ideas into the pot.

SO, is the 8th going to work for everyone for a meeting? If that works, someone name a spot that has some room for us, and let's start hashing it out.......Old Rides are a must of course. Might as well look at a few cars while we are at it !

Interesting thing yesterday. Lorna and I went to the Chandler Municipal Airpark to the Hangar Cafe for breakfast. Little did we know there was a minor air show going on. They had the Sentimental Journey on display there which is normally at the Mesa Muni or so I am to understand it is anyway.

You want something interesting? Couple a pre-1954 only hot rod and custom show in conjunction with an old warbird show. Make the rules for entry strict, maybe even promote a dress code like they do at Goodwood.

If you really want a good show, you are going to have to make if different than the other dozen or better shows around just like it.

Where were you for the hot rod-a-rams's and greaseballs that happened at club congress, or the art show hot rod manifasto. All of these happened in Tucson from 1998-2006. You should talk the young guys that have hot rod shop at the conrner of 6th ave and drachman in downtown and get something going.

    Ron,

I attended Greaseball! It ruled! I also drove (road) right beside you from Tombstone to Tucson (two Deuce Coupes side by side-I sent you a picture?). The Old Pueblo is less without you my friend. The operative statement in your post is: "1998-2006". In this the year of our lord 2010, Tucson has become a rocky hollow ground where the Hot Rodder's seed can find no purchase. While I admit taking action is more dignified than complaining, creating a scene in Tucson comparable to that in Phoenix is a tall order. The NHRA is not interested in Tucson, Goodguys is not interested in Tucson, and the TSRA is an elitist group of snobs. They are so formal they actually have a "Sargent of Arms" in their club and refer to him as such when they gather. That is so lame dude... My original post was a comment to the statement made by this threads creator, and I stand by it. I like you Ron, and I like your Father. I wish you were back in town bro, you have a knack for bringing like minded people together to celebrate.

Pre 54 ? Leaves me out......

Man it seems like everyone wants a different kind of show and VERY strict about what is let in. Are we going to make it a HAMB only show? That is the general consensis that I am getting because everyone wants to make it so strict that nothing gets in that they may not like and if you are on the HAMB it is all about traditional. I am starting to get discouraged already because it seems like it is going to be hard to make everyone happy. I understand everyone has different opinions of what they like in a show and you can never make everyone happy no matter what, so something has to give somewhere. Just what is it ??

Treat it like business. Put together a small steering committee of people that know wtf is up and are willing to put in some time to make the show a reality.

You won't make everyone happy... but if you set the bar high and go for quality you will have something special.

I talked to a few people that went to Viva this year. They commented that the Shifters did a really good job keeping the rat and riff-raff out - everyone was really happy that they went and had a great time.

    go man go

Kerry, I don't have a pre-54 car either. At least not one that runs, but that's not the point. Please do not take offense to this but when I think of traditional post-war hot rods and customs, Tri-fives do not fit in.

Granted, I know you can't satisfy everyone. But if I am going to help put on a show, I would like to have my ride there.

    I suppose,

redsteely and I were talking about this earlier today. Both of us came up with more than a few local cars that are hard traditional that would fit the bill perfectly but otherwise would get lost in a me-too pastel jellybean show.

I'm just throwing out ideas here, but what if you had an invitational section. Hand selected cars in a separate area from the rest of the crowd. Kind of like the LA Roadster show but for true period cars of a certain era and then a preferred parking for everyone else?

I don't have a problem with that. That would be cool with me if that is what everyone agrees with.

As for the post a couple above this, yes, the Shifters put on a killer car show this year at Viva. If we could do that here, obviously on a smaller level, that would be great and I think it would be a good time for everyone.

Nick is trying to come up with a place to have a meeting on the 8th and we hope to have a spot nailed down by Wednesday that we can meet at and talk and hash this out, hopefully it will be enough time for some people to plan on showing up and thowing ideas around.

We know already that not everyone will be pleased with the event, such is life. We are fairly certain that the cut-off for entries will be 1964. El Polacko is a "HAMB Hero" so to speak, and there is no reason to exclude him or that bad *** pick-up. There's also a ****-ton of HAMB friendly tri-fives not just on the board but all over the Southwest, and it wouldn't be a car show with out them. It's not our intention to alienate anyone or be "exclusive", but if your ride is Humty Dumpty collage of a tractor, s-10, and makes me afraid that i'll need a tet**** shot, you'll be asked to park across the street.

I am looking for a place centrally located to host the first committee meeting and encourage all of you guys to show up and throw your hat in the ring.

We are planning for the meeting to take place on Saturday, May 8 at 11:00am.

I will get the place locked in and will let you guys know where by Wednesday. If you would like to attend please send me a PM so I can figure on how many seats we'll need.

Thanks man, I don't mind being excluded from the show so to speak. I'm fine being a spectator sometimes. :)

I've done my fair share of shows and promotions for the club, and I agree with you.

The two best annual shows that occur in AZ are sinners events (IMHO), but organizing them is a royal PITA even though they are quite small.

All were happy except the rat and riff raff -- and the spectators who like rat rods.

I think if you promote to hot rod scene and to the right people you will have a good turn out with cars. Once you get a crowd of Rockasilly scenesters showing up is when you end up with 500 people and 15 hot rods to show up.. I would push to keep this on the hamb and other cool forums and not on azrockabilly.net you will have a great turn out..

We noticed a huge diference in 1 show when we put flyers out to different groups and the actual turnout of hot rods.. that year was had less cars and more people wich was not our intent... .

what about doing something for a school or something? Do it to support like burn victims or fire fighters something that we can help out our local community as well..... Some places might put their location up for free ... maybe a vfw, elks lodge shriners would be awesome!

Chandler is only 6 hours from San Diego. Nice drive through the desert... I bet you would get some So Cal guys.

  29. I believe that's Falcon Field that you're talking about. They have an aviation museum there. It's pretty much "on the way" to Saguaro Lake/ Supers***ion Mountains/ Goldfield Saloon/ Tortilla Flats area.

I've been watching this thread bear fruit, and I think it's getting damn close. I agree that a show at Falcon Field would be rad, but let's definitely combine it with a cruise/reliability run, say up to Payson then back down to Roosevelt Lake? Maybe head west through Carefree and out to Lake Pleasant, finishing at Speedworld?

A smaller, more dedicated show out here would be welcomed, and I agree that the focus should be on THE CARS!
