Weekend At Winfield's. Too f@#%ing cool!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by KIRK!, Nov 25, 2003.

  1. I'm with Denise. The "blue thingy" is an old sprint car and I saw another one in the background of one of the first photos. Any info on them ? They seem out of place... [IMG]

The old timer with the cane in the pic of me and Gene brought it. He was hoping to sell it. I didn't get any full shots of it but I did take some close ups of some parts. And of course I asked if he had anymore sprint car steering boxes.

Gene is a great guy, he really does make a fuss & gives you all his time, a couple of times he's seen me first but still made a point of getting my attention.....thats way too cool!
At the last CHRR he gave us a seat at his stall & handed us his photo album to look through, if you've not seen it yet try to, its full of amazing pics from his past!

He had that photo album out and it was killer. Here are the only two shots I have of that roundy round car. I thought I had more.

  5. pretty great stuff- nice reporting

when do the cl***es begin at you're place.
    i'll bring 175 ml of beer....for each day. =)

  6. Wow! Thanks for posting. Really great stuff.

When I see pic.'s like this it reminds me of what kustom and chopper shops "really" look like.

I respect a lot of what Jesse James does...but the Discovery channel shows featuring his shop have given a bad depiction of what a rod/kustom/chopper shop looks like. Gene's place looks a little more like the shops I grew up around. Function first, cool looks last (if at all).

Just out of curiosity, what are his chop jobs going for? Is the price astronomical or has he kept it reasonable?

Hey Justin, you can come by anytime. With or without the beer.

I don't know about his chop prices. I was afraid to ask. I was sure it was more than I could afford.

Hey Kirk sounds like a good story for that Biletproof Magazine you want to do! I may have a line on your 46 Olds grill! I sold one to a guy along with the other body parts last year and he just threw it in his huge parts pile. I will give him a call.

Gene let me know that you don't need a spotless shop/show room to do good work! I've followed that example (except the good work part) he's always been a hero to me. just the girlfriends he keeps showing up with is an inspiration [IMG]

I debated turning around and ditching everything to live in Mojave and offer to be the janitor just to be able to hang out there eveyday.

Gene Winfield’s shop in Mojave = Nirvana! Thanks for sharing this with us. Too cool. [IMG]

That is just cool as hell.

And the coolest part is that it's just a big junk-filled unkempt shop in the middle of the desert, but it's a million times better than Boyd Coddington's factory. Man.

Jim, Are you referring to Joyce by any chance? The little blonde with the 29 RPU? You being from Oregon, I'm thinking you might know her.

Denise 2 years ago I introduced Gene and Joyce to each other at CHRR in Bakersfield a year after Bub check out. Now they have been hanging out ever since, she is a great friend of ours and a wonderful person. Gene was a total gentlemen, and every time I see him either up here or down south he is always very cool.....Danny

That is VERY cool! I met Joyce at B'ville this past year and spent alot of time chatting, hanging out and "cutting cookies" in Big Olds as she calls it. Since then, her and I have kept in touch. She is an AWESOME hot rod lady. I'm glad you introduced her to Gene. Those two sure seem to enjoy each others company.

I have sent her a link to the HAMB with all the "rules". I'm hoping she lurks around a bit and decides to do an intro and start hanging out here. Next time you see her, please tell her I said "hi".

Thanks for sharing the experience, Kirk -- and sharing it so well! Gene is a treasure, one of the nicest persons in the movement. In Japan, folks like Gene are accorded the honor of being considered a national treasure; Gene deserves no less from us.

Someone asked why he moved out there instead of staying in Hollyweird/New Babylon...
    Just look at the view...
Those pictures show North South East and West...
It's magnificently EMPTY of CITY and still Freeway close to New Babylon!

Thats a bummer, Brewsir, I really liked its style. Watching the build-up on here was a**** the HAMBs better moments as well. Was it the new owner who wanted Winfield to change something on it?

A japanese guy bought my car...guess he wanted gene to fix it up before getting it...I had stripped it to bare metal when I did the car...so it really was a waste of money I would think (having winfield redo it that is) but it's his now.

Hey Brewsir, Gene said they stripped one side because he would not guarantee his paint over someone elses bodywork. He only stripped one side and because the work was so good he didnt strip the other.
