Hi, I have a Weiand Flathead Ford 2x2 intake with script writing on top between the carbs. I would like to know when it was produced. All I see online is the raised letter intakes. Sorry unable to send pics. Kelly R.
I have never seen a pre 1948 low rise Weiand 2 X 2 intake manifold with script writing on it. I have 3 pre 1948 low rise 2 X 2 Weiand intake manifolds. There is a Weiand 2 X 2 with carb mounts far apart, a Weiand 2 X 2 carb mounts close together and a Weiand 2 X 2 carb mounts close together with the original Weiand bolt on carb risers that allows you to mount the generator in the stock position. All of these intakes have raised block letters. If the Weiand name is written into the casting as you suggest then your intake is something I have never seen. Without a picture it is hard to access what it is that you actually have. It may be a Weiand intake manifold or it could be something else that someone has modified. Spend a few minutes and see if you can post a picture of your intake. I am quite interested to see what you have. Edel brock introduced 2 script intake manifolds towards the latter part of 1948. One was the Edelbrock Regular hi rise with the script raised lettering and the other was the Edelbrock Regular low rise with the raised script lettering.
My bad. The letters are raised. Now I have another question. Why would one cut a 2" diameter hole in the front? Oil maybe? Or something else? They sealed it with a scrap piece of aluminum sheet and some gasket sealer and 4 allen bolts. Originally bought it as a garage ornament and did not ask any questions on it.
The intake manifold you have is a standard 2 X 2 pre 1948 Weiand with raised block letters. Nothing uncommon here. The hole cut in the front would be for an oil fill tube. Sounds like hole for the oil fill tube was cut too large causing a poor fitting oil tube and the hole was crudely covered back over. There was likely engine vapor escaping out of the poor fitting hole making driving rather unpleasant. The oil fill hole could be aluminum welded; the weld dressed and smoothed out and then you would have a good looking and functional Weiand flathead intake manifold again.
