Weird turn signal problem.... No flash on one side.

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by Fat ASS Whitewalls, Dec 4, 2024.

  1. I've been fixing the butchered wiring on an off topic truck. I have it done, but it has a problem that has me stumped. The right turn signals blink once, then nothing, the left turn signals work fine, as well as the 4 way hazard lights. The hazards and the turn signals use the same bulbs. All bulbs are good. The wiring in this truck is some of the worst butchered wiring I've ever seen. The main hot wire was melted. Here's a couple pictures of the mess I started with. thumbnail.jpg thumbnail (1).jpg

Bad ground, most likely. If the current flow isn't high enough, the flasher can't operate.

Onetrick’s suggestion would be my first point of call but I once spent weeks chasing a similar issue on a newly built car to eventually find I had put the wrong wattage bulb in one of the flashers.

  4. Ok, I'll check out the bulbs and ground. It's weird that the flashers work, but not the right side turn signals. Thanks.

Don’t know too many who like going over something they just did, but I’d be looking at the steering column again. I always run a ground wire directly from the frame to the taillights, really helps when diagnosing problems and just in general use.

Another thing that I find troublesome is the quality of the flashers available now, personally I’ll grab some out of vehicles in the junk yard before buying new

  7. Wanderlust, I tried a good used flasher with the same results. I haven't touched the turn signal wiring, but I need to look at it. The turn signal wiring was intact.

Do you have any LED lights in the equation? Remember they use a different flasher or need a load added to the circuit.

Is that a Chevrolet steering column?

@flynbrian48 has 62 Chev. Several seem to think turn signal problem is the contacts in the switch at the top of the column.

  10. gary macdonald, I will check the bulbs. As screwed up as the rest of the truck is, or was, it could have anything in it.
pprather, no not Chevrolet. I plan to look at the turn signal switch a little closer tomorrow.

As mentioned LED bulbs could keep the flasher from having enough load to flash. With all the lights flashing, there is probably enough load to flash the hazards. Switch the flasher between the two and verify that the flasher is good.

  12. Fixed it. Checked all the bulbs, all ok, no LED's. Rechecked the flashers, this time the flasher was bad. Replaced the flasher and the turn signals work. This car has two flashers, one for turn signals, one for 4 way flashers. I originally thought the 4 way flasher was the turn signal flasher. I figured that out today. It's all good now. Thanks for the help.
