Was wondering if their is a alternative to the 3M welding and spark paper for protecting the windows in my race car for the upcoming rust repair and roll bar installation?
    Thanks James.

I use a cheap harbor freight weld blanket. Think it was like 20 bucks and reusable.

Be careful with thos HF blankets. I threw one on a small fire and the blanket burned.
Not exactly confidence inspiring. It didn’t burn fast, but it did burn.

I feel a blanket will be awkward to keep in place inside the car.

Yeah I didn't expect them to be fireproof as far as putting out fires. Just enough protection to keep the Johnny balls off of important stuff.

Yep it can be a pain getting it postioned correctly, I use duck tape to hold it in some positions when I can.

James, the only other option is removing the gl*** i reckon. I've used the spatter gel and rubbed it on a late model quarter gl*** before, when I was sectioning a quarter in and didn't wanna R&R the gl***. It worked. But it would be a mess in all of the gl***.

I have used cardboard, Cut to fit, 2" tape done...
    Or isolate area with cardboard...
Have a hand squirt bottle at the ready, rarely ever needed, but if you don't, You will...

I use the 3M deflection paper. It works very well on gl*** and painted surfaces. I highly recommend.

I have used countless rolls of it over the years. Put it on other cars in the shop as well. Amazing how far sparks can fly. I also know of no other manufacture of a similar product. But it is still 10 times cheaper than a piece of gl***, interior, paint or stainless trim. Don't ask how I know! lol Larry

Another cheaper way that might work is cover the gl*** with a layer of 2 inch masking tape then go over that with a couple of layers of duct tape. The masking tape will peel up easier and won't have that sticky mess.

The cheapest way is for the customer to buy a roll, and when the job is done, he gives you the rest !

I like how you think Marty, but I feel like I'm the customer. :(

If you go on Amazon and order one of those boxes of small magnets, you can put them in the center of the paper and it will hold the paper to the window when you put a washer on the outside of the window.........Handy with the back window sags.

I've seen guys use welding blankets.

As @HOTRODNORSKIE mentioned, you can layer masking tape and other media. I worked at a shop that did industrial sand blasting and shot peening. To protect areas they didn't want touched they would layer duct tape and aluminum tape. I do the same for bead blasting and it works great. The welding blanket or paper would be a lot easier, though.

Welding blankets aren't fire blankets. I am not surprised it burned, it's not meant to absorb the heat of a fire. Individual sparks while welding are a very different situation.

First time I used a welding blanket years ago I made the mistake of rubbing my eyes after at some point. Next thing ya know both eyes are on fire and itching like crazy... Lasted a while too. Turns out those damn things are made of some kind of fibergl***. Another lesson learned the hard way. Ive never heard of the 3M Paper but Im sure as **** gonna put it on my shop list.

Funny, sometimes you're reminded that you really have to shop around. Prices below are Canadian dollar prices from some of the retailers I frequently use:

Amazon Canada: $195.99 CAD + Tax, arrives Saturday.
Napa Canada: $348.99 CAD + Tax, pick up tomorrow (Wednesday) in store.
Summit Racing: $191.58 CAD + Tax + 52.04 CAD shipping and duty, arrives by next Friday.
Local paint supply: $322.20 CAD + Tax.

    Quite the range.

Amazon had it for 144 a roll but when I went to my car the price had went up to 240 a roll.
Summit had it for 141 plus tax and free shipping.
