maybe i missed something here but if you cut a hole in it and it didnt explode why would it when you weld it shut? i have cut the end out of 5000 gallon gas tanks, we just ran a hose from the exhaust of a diesel truck into the tank.

Gasoline will not burn without oxygen.

Filling with water will not push out all the oxygen and the steam fucks up your weld.
    Argon
    Argon co2 mix
Exhaust from running whatever, all have all worked flawlessly many times for me, but there’s no need to even weld on the top of the tank.
JB weld will hold up fine on its own for many years.
Sand the patch and tank clean - glue it up - tape down your patch.
Iv done this on the bottom of several GAS tanks and there still holding.

Here is the official, standard Army procedure for welding a fuel tank. This procedure is listed in the relevant Field Manuals:

Run the exhaust from a diesel engine into the tank.

The heat and fumes will evaporate the gas and there is very little oxygen.

I have also done this with the exhaust frm a gasoline engine BUT you want it to be a fuel injected car that is running in closed loop. Then, there is no chance of unburned gasoline vapors.

I have also welded on a tank with a powerful vacuum sucking away, this on tanks that had not seen gas in a while. This way any residual fumes are pulled away.

I know the standard wisdom is to fill the tank with water, and I have seen it done this way many times, but believe it or not this is not foolproof. For proof: emtpy a soda can, rinse it out, pour a drop of gasoline in and swish it around. Now rinse the can well with water. Smell or taste it - it will stink of gas.

I'm older and wiser now, but when I was young, dumb, and full of it I was helping a guy weld a gas tank with a car running,a hose from the running cars tailpipe into the one end of the tank and exhaust coming out the other end.We gas welded it and it went just fine.I'm not saying I'd ever do it again, but it did work.
