this is not a good idea...safety first while building your ride or someone else will be buying it in a garage sale.rip
i always used the dish soap and water ...no problem ,, i also saw a guy set one out in the yard ,poured a trail of gas about 10 ft. and lit it... the tank jumped about a foot off the ground , he said after one***** you safe ,, and he welded away !!!!!!!!!!
burn centers are full of people with ideas like this.... my uncle purged a 55 gallon drum with water ,emptied the water and went to lunch. came back and commenced to cut the top out with his torch. my aunt found him an hour later...they found his head later.
Stick the torch into it and let it flash then weld away, Well thats how i do it. Ok the recomended way is to clean it well hot tank or water & soap, etc then purge it with C02
people should not recommend things like this, someone will try it because you said it was ok. we as teachers should take the advice we give seriously.
Probably the safest way for you is to get one of the guys who posted his method of welding previously used gas tanks to weld it for you while you take your lady to lunch. We lost a good radiator guy here locally a few years ago when he welded on a tank he had already run through his tank and had done all the things he thought were right. I've had too many scares in my life and I don't need any more and I have already used up five of my nine lives.
If you purge the tank with inert gas, helium, argon, nitrogen ( No mixed gases some are mixed with oxygen) it should be safe to weld. When purging remember to seal the tank and have one inlet for the inert gas and one outlet to vent the fumes. Run the inert gas a few minutes before welding. Remember without oxygen nothing will burn......
I hope The guy that said throw a match in it was kidding! Just saying something like that creeps me out.
i did this same thing recently and it worked fine. rinsed a few times with just water then i did it once with a bunch of palmolive. you could smell more soap than gas after that. no problems at all.
