I am looking at an old grill for one of my projects, its chrome plated cast metal and has a crack on one side, nothing missing just cracked clean through...anyone know if this can be welded?? If so what the process is? Thanks in advance.

I've made repairs using broken teeth from a donor grill. Use a torch with a small tip, and use the donor grill tooth, or grill bar as a welding rod. Practice first.

Well. I've welded just about anything and everything.....depends if its steel or cast Iron...............If its the old cast steel.............gotta get it clean, wire brush the piss outta it......clea a big area,
put on a grinding wheel.....shine it to bare metal,
put on small tip on your torch...............
get a 1/16 TIG length steel rod or a old clothshanger (closer to the origional composition of the steel)........

and as the man said....pratice on a old grill for several hours to get the technique down...........and take your time...........

I usually spark test the steel to see what I got...........

I repair pot metal regularly. The crack you are referring to is a typical fix for a competent chrome plater. If you are getting the grill rechromed, have the plater do it. It will be worth it.

There are alternatives, but I don't use them, therefore cannot comment. Although I have tried the Cecil Muggy weld. It is expensive, hard to do right, and fickle to plate. So needless to say, I haven't used it in years.

Platers will plate a very thin layer of copper over the stripped/blasted/sanded part, then solder up all repairs, then grind down, then continue through normal chrome restoration process.

I'm pretty sure he means Zinc-based die-cast parts, not anything ferrous. Right?

    I believe its zinc based...its a 42-47 Packard grill...

  9. What CHROMEPLATERJOSH said...copper strike, then solder...
