I spent most of my life self employed. You should try it, it gives new meaning to the words "time is money". It's very expensive to run a business today, I would never think of sitting at my work bench and wasting time on the computer, when I stop producing, I stop earning, it's a simple concept to understand when you're self employed, but it seems to get a little blurry when someone else is paying you.
This isn't really aimed at you Denise, it's aimed at America in general.

Some of you missed the point of the fact that checking out the HAMB from time to time at work has not cut into my productivity as I have been the top sales person since I entered this department six years ago and have been rewarded for my sales figures time and time again. I can successfully multi-task and would not have my job this long if my sales were lacking.

Oh yeah, and I was self employed for over 10 years prior to this position. I thought it was time to get a job/career with benifits such as health, dental, optical, 401K and a pension. So yeah, I did, and still do, HAMB on my own time and I do know the phrase "Time is Money" very well.

When it comes down to it, I do realize I am their employee and they can do what they want and I have to live with it. The ONLY reason I'm bringing this up is the fact that I will NOT be on the HAMB during the day so if a PM comes in or a thread that needs my attention is posted, it will have to wait till the evenings. Just yesterday I got a PM from a pal and when I didn't respond right away he texted me to check out the PM that he just sent. I know even with this thread I will get folks PMing me in a couple of weeks asking what's wrong and how come I haven't been on the HAMB as much.

My work tried to block it once, but since I work in the auto industry I convinced them its something I need. So I get paid for 10hrs a day for being on the HAMB! Oh yeah and I take several smoke breaks also.

It dont help that it says 18,119 posts on you avatar girl, your boss took a look at that and figured that all of that is on his or her time, look at it this way if youre on commission now you can really make a killing, between video poker, online **** smoking and cell phones a boss cant make a freakin dime. I have a 3 strikes and out policy, work is for work.

average time to post, what 5 minutes x 18000 = 90,000 divided by 60 = 1500 hours, the average work year is 2000 hours, so minimum you got them for 75% of one whole years wages, that doesnt take into account all the reading time and other time, will you be mad when they go out of business?

Time for Ryan to make an official position of HAMB Amb***ador and put you on the payroll. Of course you'll need an ***istant so it would be a natural to have that position filled with a male (just in the name of fairness). Now, just by coincidence I happen to be retired and in need of a part time job. With my retirement secure I could be persuaded to take any compensation in the form of chocolate chip cookies. See where this is going?;)

Sounds to me that you were not singled out, there is always someone that abuses the system and therefor the law of the land is everyone pays because of the slackers. PS hang in girl..

My job consist of sitting around waiting for something to break for a good portion of the time. I work 12 hour rotating shift work. Get to work, take a reading and then sit and wait for somethig to mess up. If nothing messes up I take another reading mid shift and a partial reading 3/4 shift.

That leaves a lot of time to kill on certain days. The net also helps keep you awake at 3:00 in the morning. It's not always so easy to do when part of the shifts include a F-S-S 6:30am to 6:30 PM, off on Monday and then work T-W-Th 6:30pm to 6:30 AM. The body isn't designed to do that.

I used to be that people brought a book or magazine to read. So for those accusing others of stealing company time, bite me.

Denise, It's so much easier to access the net on the new cell phones today than just a short while ago.

My average number of posts per day is a mesley 6.39, lets just round that up to 7 posts per day. At "your" rate of 5 minutes per post, which only an idiot would take that long to type up a post, it would be 35 minutes total per day actually spent posting on the HAMB and I'm probalby half that cuz I type quite fast AND probably half the amount was done at work and half was done nights and weekends.

Obviously POST count is not the problem, amount of hours per day the HAMB was up on my desktop was. LOTS of that time the HAMB was minimized as would make sense in order for me to succesully do my job at the level I have continued to do so over the years.

Go get him Denise. I am self-employed and at times I have a lot of down time. Not so much this time of year, but the HAMB is always on the computer. I just don't always get to read it. Yes, time is money, but when you have to wait for parts to show up, you have down time. Can't avoid it, and this is just my situation, not anybody elses.

  21. I can tell you don't appreciate your GOOD employee's. You'll appreciate them less when they quit and hang their own shingle out and put you out of business.

Hey,.. Im not your boss... if you count the time you read all of the stuff it would add up to more than 35 minutes a day, I think I would just be glad all it did is disappear, this new bs work environment has all of these employers on the war path to get rid of anyone over 35, and especially near the five oh, they want to whack you for any justifiable reason just to cut insurance costs and paid vacation and sick time and the economy is their big excuse. They only started looking cause they most likely hired some hot shot productivity spe******t. I know more than a few of my friends who thought they were un replaceable, then this bs hit and a box got tossed on their desk and they had 15 minutes to get off the property. Seven years was a long time to get away with it, you know Im right, just grin about it. We love ya but dont lose your job for us.

Hey Stu, thats a good one, they cant even drive the trucks without smashing them and getting tickets for being on a device while driving, let em I welcome the compe***ion.
My good employees turn off their devices and place them in their lockers as is the policy of the labor union they joined, for which their union requests 67 dollars per hour for their time, if I sent one of them to your home and charged you that time plus my operating costs and a mild profit and the guy texted his honey for 45 minutes and submitted a 60 minute bill to you, you would call my office and be all inferno on my ***, just as you are now. So in order to please my customers, which who knows you may be one, I run as efficient and orderly an operation as possible as I respect my clients time, as again you may be one I would think you should appreciate this as it in your favor, question is this Stu, do I send the guy to your house that gets the job done in an hour or do I send Mr. Texty to your house and let him take four hours?
Hahaha, see what a bad person you have to be? you have to think of others, haha, Let them open a shop, how long will you stand there waitin for Mr. Texty to lift his head and service you kind sir, yes sir, right this way sir we will do a spotless job sir thank you sir, or huh want ya want? Hahahahahaha

I am on commission and have no desire for my numbers to drop. I've been on the top of the pile for years and I plan on staying there. I really enjoy my lifestyle and that takes me staying on top.

I'd go into work and take a few hostages. Management becomes alot more flexable when you start waving a gun around!

at this point they probably have someone looking at sites that people hangout on all day, most likely the home IP would get blocked soon enough. And most of the proxies get blocked pretty quick.

My wife went through the same thing, sort of, at work.

In order not to get drawn into the gossip that all of the B's in her office do all day long, Christine would listen to a radio station on her computer. The evil IT guys came in and blocked access to Facebook, My Space, etc......... and Christine's radio station out of Idaho, of all places on all 150+ computers. Not that she'd admit to doing the Facebook thing at work (says she), but without the radio access, she found that she was being drawn into the day to day gossip that women do and it was taking away from her productivity.

Christine went to her boss and explained her situation how she was more productive when the other B's didn't try to involve her in the conversation of the hour because they knew that she wouldn't reply if she had the music going.

She was told that with everyone doing their own thing on the internet, it drastically slowed down the company network. I totally understand that as it can drastically affect overall productivity. Bottom line is that the evil IT guy showed up the next day and allowed her access to whatever radio station she likes. She is happy and more productive (again, says she).

So I'm thinking that you need to somehow convince the boss that access to the HAMB is part of what keeps you productive.
