Cool new project. Btw, I grew up in Durango, So back in the day- I thought those plates could be from around Dgo..

I still believe Colorado IS one of the best places to live ( except where -everyone else lives )

Would make a nice custom-I think a 4.3 chebbie and an OD automatic would motivate it pretty good.

    41,
I found the car in the San Luis Valley, and the plates are 9 years expired, so it could well have come from La Plata County. I love living in Colorado.:D

    Hey Animal,
I agree that your American looks very solid and clean. I can tell you that the stock front end is actually pretty strong and will support a v8. Problem is the front end parts can get pricey (trunions) and hard to find which sucks cuz you spend alot of money and you still have a Rambler front end... I have seen pics of a Rambler coupe with a straight axle from the 60's..but only that one. If your trying to keep it simple I would go with a small block. Get a 8" Maverick rear end..it will go right in. The trans tunnel is tight so you will probably have to open it up. Keep the steel wheels and dog dish caps. I am doing a 2 dr. wagon but I went really weird and went with a rotary turbo setup. Good luck with the car:D

Those cars scream drag car. Gasser or not, it's a small, (reletively) light body- and with the right engine would be killer.

There's a really nice American in the Seattle area. It's a grey one that has a very clean SBC in it. Maybe one of the PNW guys has some pictures.
    Very conservative sleeper type car.
I'll look to see if I have any pictures but it's been several years since I was there and saw it at some shows.

  9. what about keeping the engine AMC with a 343 or 360

I have a 318/904 from a Plymouth cop car, was planning on using that. It looks like surgery will be required, whatever I use, unless I get a Ford 250 or something small enough to fit. It's gonna be fun, no matter what! :D

It's going to get a blown hemi, since we have all decided that it's going to be built as a proper nostalgia A/GS race car, and won't be street driven. :D

But, IF...someone was going to build it as a street car....an AMC V8 would be high on the list for cool factor. These were good mills but I have no idea as to parts availability these days. Probably not the best choice for daily driver economy, but I can't think of anything much cooler than the original I6 for mileage and it's probably not all that great. Another case of a 283 fitting the bill perfectly but seeming so bland.

Pretty lines, but it needs a roof swap in the worst way.

What about cutting the roof completely off, roadstering the doors, and getting one of those '80s Mercedes SL coupe removable hardtops for it?

What about a 4 cyl turbo from a Tbird or Mustang?

  16. These are cool little cars...I had a wagon and little two door like yours...they are unibody and definitely get looks everywhere you go...every time I get one somebody comes along that "just has to have it" and I sell it...I always wanted to build a gasser wagon and that's my next purchase once I finish up all the projects around here...so my vote is definitely gasser

  17. We've got a guy locally who buys old Nash Ramblers and Studebakers. He's really done some neat stuff with them. Has a Rambler American wagon similar to your car which hes restoring mostly stock, most are mild customs. They have done ok at local shows - they're not your fathers customs, they stand out cause they're different. Good luck.

I'm actually talking to a guy about one of those, from a Turbo Coupe, with a 5 speed. I called him today. We'll see what happens.

I'm pretty sure there won't be any roadstering of the doors; it gets down past twenty below here quite regularly in the winter. Here's a roof swap I found a while back; Not my cup of tea, but somebody went to a lot of work.

    top REALLY changes the look!

    anyway, how about a 2.5 from a wrangler and a 5 speed?
only if the turbo'd ford don't work out (that'd be MY 1st choice).

The top on that was from a Celica...I do like the wheel opening graft a lot. I should find out something on the turbo 2.3 by this weekend. :)

Looks like the rear window and roofline are shorter on this one? Could shorten the roof a little more for a business coupe look, or one of these would make a really cool el camino, ranchero type car too.

You best not be talking about my '75 Gran Fury Sport 4 door sedan, 'cause that's gonna make for one sweet GASSER!

    GASSER'S ROOOOOL!!

  30. Guy had one at a show Sunday.. red, white top, mag wheels, pretty stock otherwise. Might have had a newer motor in it, sounded like a V8. Looked good.
