  1. I think this is the best idea...the headers do look good, but I think too much of the engine compt. is exposed....

    do both.
paint the hood sides with the rest of the car ( bad ass ride! )
keep the pipes, and when ya feel the need to "change" your car, remove the hood sides and run it with the pipes.
    then change it back, ect.!

the pipes on your car are one of those parts that in 50 years someone is going to be bithing is missing !

    Leave them ON!
    - They really set the car off. I haven't seen a set like them on any other car.

Leave the headers, a little hot rod and a lot of custom. The photoshop above with the smooth hood sides makes me yawn.

The car has such sultry lines and is definitley timeless. It flows from front to back and back to front with out any effort, and is a true head turner. I voted to keep the headers due to the fact that, with the car being overwhelmingly smooth, the headers are an awsome contrast which add to the aggressiveness of the car. I vote "keep'em on" in 05'!! ;)

I can't even believe we're having this conversation. The headers make that car.

headers would look good on your ride. just not sure about those headers. as someone else said, they're nice headers, just matched to the wrong ride. it kinda destroys the sleekness of the car.

IMHO, a "Kustom" does not have big ugly headers running out of the hood (meaning no disrespect to you or your choice of those headers)!!!

Whitewalls, hubcaps, lowered (bagged), nosed, decked...that's a kustom...not a 'hot rod" (in the truest sense of the word)...it should have dual exhausts exiting under the rear bumper AND it should have hood sides...it should be smooth. A kustom's lines shouldn't be broken up by protrusions...ever wonder why you don't see hoods open on kustoms?

You're trying hard to mix hot rod and kustom and it just doesn't work.

But then again, that's just MY opinion...do what you want with YOUR car and never ever bow to peer pressure!

PS, Missed you at the HAMB drags...

I think the headers take away from the smooth look of the car. They look cool just not on this car.

If you take the headers off, you will have to change your name to "Slow, cruizing speedaddict" just so you know.

40stude, yea I really wanted to be at Hamb Drags but work calls. Just wanted to say thanks for the honest opinions, that's why I asked for them. My next question is can hotrod and custom styles ever be crossed and has it ever been done successfully? Anybody have pics of Westergard styled customs?

Outlaw, I'm in no way trying to insult you or Lux for the awesome work you guys did on the headers, I'm just trying to get some opinions on making the car the right way.

Rocky, I wonder what they would look like on your ride man? or if they would even fit?

  15. The headers should stay.
I do like the idea of a partial hood to cover the firewall.

I think your way is the right way, Speedy- our scene is all about mixing styles. I think the smooth sides make the car look like a dog head. If you go that route, put some gullwing doors on and you got yourself a set of ears:D

I gotta give to props for the massive amount of response you've recieved on this. It's obvious people feel strongly about your ride, so you did something REALLY right!

    Man, I love that car.

I think you need to leave the headers on but fill in the hood sides as well, at least the cowl area, as was mentioned.

I know how long it took me to build the headers for the spacetruck and they were STRAIGHT. Therefore I bought the ones for the lander. Money well spent in my opinion.

A lot will depend on the paint color you chose but at the very least I would do the partial hood sides to cover the firewall. I think that car would look super smooth with the headers off and the right color of paint but in the end it is your car and your call.

  22. How about a compromise, a smooth hood side that has a cutout for the pipes and a grill make of 1/4" aluminum to hid the engine in the area beneath the pipes. Kind Duesenberg/Mecedes 540K Form follows function. I stumbled on a nice Cherry Coke color, Maybe a dark metallic gold/brown color, with Candy maroon.

I agree. The headers are a standout feature, without them the car looks like all the other smoothed off 30's/40's cars. Who says a classy custom can't have exposed headers? Duesenberg J-model?

I think that you should DEFINATELY leave those headers, and not even have hood sides.

If you take the headers off, put sides on, then its basically just another nice, smooth 39 kustom. Very nice, but doesnt break from the norm.

I think it would look much better with the headers. They will go noticed, not not in a "sore thumb" type of way......

looks good, at any rate. What color are you thinking of going with? Still going with that sweet pinstriping scheme?

    Have fun

Leave 'em on, give it its own look, and they look tuff...

They will draw attention in my mind, which is a good thing, I mean, I love the old stuff, Bertolucci, Ayala Bros., etc... But, I think that will just give the car more "oomph", I guess you could say, they may detract the bodylines, but it will still be a killer kar either way...

    TTYL.

    Later, peace...

    Troy.

  29. i say leave em till you do the shiny paint. then make the decision. you can always fab up smooth sides or sides that let the headers stick out later. you have a super nice car no matter how you do it...nice work

Do them like the photoshop above or I'll make fun of you until your kid graduates college!
They're part of the car's character now, you can't take em off!
