Help! I am attempting to mount a F-1 Steering box onto a model A frame. My original plan was for it to fit snuggly in place between my oil filter, and the bell housing- 'plenty of room'- whoops! It won't quite clear the bellhousing... and i figure I've got a couple of different options, and hoping someone can point me in the right direction... I can move the whole works forward, and run some sort of block off for the oil filter. I would have to run some sort of external filter, or no oil filter, but I can cross that bridge after I'm able to STEER my car over it- ha OR... I was looking in the tech archive, and I see that it's possible to cut off the mounting flange, and re-weld it further back, allowing the box to stick out of the frame a little more, and clear the motor/ bellhousing. What would you do? -Jake
I had similat issues putting a pontiac motor in my T. I cut off the chunk of frame ffom the f1, and turned it in to a bracket for the st. box. It mounts above the frame rail now. My oil filter was in the same place as the frame rail , on the p***enger side. I bought a remote oilfilter kit from speedway, and then fashioned a bracket to mount the filter under the frame rail. You could also get one of those beehive filters and mount it on the cowl...
We came across the same problem trying to install a Y block into a 32 frame. Now I know why you dont see many of these engines in the old fords anymore. We punted and installed a flathead instead. But I would suggests moving the box forward and installing a remote filter setup. Good luck. Hopefully someone here didnt punt and came up with a good solution for you.
This might not work on an A frame but it lets the F-1 box get by the Stude starter motor. If it's close there may be another way to skin a cat.
Thanks for the input so far guys, I appreciate it Tommy... that pic has got the ball rolling for me...
Here's a couple pics I took of some boxes mounted on top of the frame. I know they aren't Y-blocks but may help spark some ideas.
awesome thanks! is there any advantage to going on top of the frame vs. thru the frame and using a spacer / plate.
Thanks for the post. I was just mocking my f1 box up last nite and was trying to figure out how I was gonns mount it. I like nosurfs pics. This site is great, think of something and ****, someone posts something.
